Just Goldman?

Monday, May 17, 2010 – by Staff Report

Lloyd Blankfein

An Updated List of Goldman Sachs Ties to the Obama Government Including Elena Kagan ... This essay shows the pervasive influence of Goldman Sachs and its units (like the Goldman-Robert Rubin-funded Hamilton Project embedded in the Brookings Institution) in the Obama government. These names are in addition to those compiled on an older such list and published here at FDL. In the future, I will combine the names here and those on the earlier article but I urge readers to look at the earlier list too (links below). Combined, this is the largest and most comprehensive list of such ties yet published. For readability and clarity, I have NOT included many of the details and links that are found in the earlier article so as to make this one less repetitive and easier to read. So, if you want more documentation, please look at my earlier diary here at Firedoglake called "A List of Goldman Sachs People (Goldman CEO, Lloyd Blankfein pictured left) in the Obama Government: Names Attached To The Giant Squid's Tentacles" published on April 27, 2010. – FireDogLake

Dominant Social Theme: Blame Goldman over and over and then shoot it.

Free-Market Analysis: FireDogLake is not exactly mainstream media, but it is a powerful liberal-progressive voice and the energetic writers there have compiled a fairly thoroughgoing list of Goldman Sachs personnel that are involved one way or another with the presidency of Barack Obama. So what's wrong with that? Who could have an issue here? Well, we do. We've offered up several previous articles on this subject, including this one here, most recently: Goldman Sachs the Anti-Christ.

Attempts (populist, progressive or conservative) to blame a single individual or group (even government group) for the current tragic state of the West economically and geopolitically are at least to a degree missing the point, in our humble estimation. They may even make things worse by confusing the situation with somewhat simplistic analyses. That often happens, especially in these generous days of "Net analysis.

Wall Street still gets the blame in popular US culture for setting off the Great Depression, for instance, when there is considerable evidence that the Depression was generated at least in part by the sociopathic determination of the British elite to return the pound to pre-World War One dominance. (The only way to do this was to inflate the heck out of the dollar, and the rest is history ...)

It is easier to blame a single group for current problems than to examine the larger issue of how the system itself has failed. And writers can build reputations as "muckrakers" if they attack the right corporate target at the right time. Rolling Stone magazine's Mike Taibbi certainly won acclaim when he wrote a scathing article about Goldman Sachs last year.

Yet often such denunciations prove facile and even simplistic. Purposefully or not, they are part of a dominant social theme of sorts, in our opinion, a promotion leading people away from an understanding of a larger reality. Our impression of the article and its research has not been improved since we received a feedback from libertarian journalist Lila Rajiva. (You can see it down-a-ways in the feedback queue of Goldman Sachs Anti-Christ article.) She writes: "Taibbi took his thesis from my work (without credit) and also I believe one part from the work of Mark Faulk (without credit) and Patrick Byrne (with credit, because he could scarcely avoid doing so, as Byrne is very well known)."

Later on, in the same feedback, she writes to us: "[Taibbi] has repeated all the liberal memes intended to keep the empire intact and distract from the real threats: 1) The investigation of 9-11; 2) The investigation of Madoff; 3) The role of private equity, hedge funds and sovereign wealth funds in manipulating the markets and the media; 4) The role of the Fed and monetarism ... The banks and Goldman Sachs are only one part of the story. Ellen Brown has also fallen into the same trap of thinking this is a black and white drama of corrupt banks versus the people and their governments. This is analysis that is not only simple minded, it is downright dangerous and not worthy of anyone who understands economics. [Punctuation ours]."

We couldn't have written the above better ourselves (and actually we do express such sentiments regularly, though more generally). It is an informed and precise explanation of exactly why these Taibbi-type analyses can be dismaying. It begins to sound, again, like the early 1930s when Congress held hearings to fulminate against Wall Street greed and corruption (given that was none, apparently, in Congress). These hearings resulted in the Wall Street that, at least to a degree, we know today. Not much of an improvement in our estimation.

The FireDogLake article does provide us with one unique twist – in that an article in a progressive milieu now acknowledges that government has been well-penetrated by sophisticated private industry seeking to pull certain levers of power to advance its self-interest. But instead of calling this process what it is – mercantilist – the article seems to imply that this is a unique situation.

Goldman, we learn, was responsible for the Great Depression, for Enron, presumably for the current financial crisis and every other major disaster in between. Not JP Morgan? Not Lazard? Not the Federal Reserve? Not the Bank of England? Not the European central bank? No other private banks? Not the Black European Nobility? Not the Jesuitical fringe? Not any firm or merchant bank in London's odd and formidable, ancient construct, the so-called "City?" Not any element of the Israeli elite or its enablers? Are all of these power centers, many of them predating Goldman, somehow now Goldman outliers and remedial projects?

This is all at least highly questionable from our libertarian point of view. Previously, we wrote of Taibbi's work regarding Goldman, "Taibbi is just like Simon Johnson ... blasting Wall Street and Goldman in particular without any regard to the larger frame of reference in which Goldman functions. Such analysis at this point in time is beyond naïve in our opinion. It verges on the manipulative."

While we're on the subject, let's take a paragraph or two to remind our readers and feedbackers once more about the ongoing ridiculousness of making the removal of Glass-Steagall a significant cause in the recent financial crisis. The crisis (as we and others in the alternative/libertarian press have written) is a failure of the West's mercantilist/central banking-initiated fiat money system. It has nothing to do with regulatory issues, or not at its core.

Over and over we read that Congressional action to allow banks to both fund business offerings and then to market them to savers was a terrible mistake. But in a free-market, any type of freely-entered-into private arrangement is welcome. If bankers want to lend while standing on their collective heads, they should be able to do so. The problems of Wall Street stem from over-regulation and from a massive concentration of order flow that was engineered by private interests with the help of the federal government after the Civil War. The idea that if only the federal government hadn't tampered with the sacred truth of Glass-Steagall (as manufactured by the US Congress in the 1930s) we wouldn't have these problems today, is just as simplistic as blaming Goldman by its lonesome for the Great Depression or the current financial crisis.

So ... we will continue to fight the good fight to focus the alternative press and its viewers on the single most powerful problem facing the world today. That problem is not government itself, not even the power elite and their fear-based promotions. The problem at the root of it all is mercantilism – the ability of private enterprise to seize the levers of government power and through the passage of laws and regulations guarantee formidable profits for themselves and their associates.

There is no doubt Goldman Sachs' corporate culture is skilled at doing this. We would even travel beyond this statement (and we have in the past) and state that Goldman may be a corporate vehicle of choice in the US (or one of them) for this sort of practice. But as we understand it, the power elite in aggregate owns or controls many of the multinationals in the world – and the legislatures and military of many countries as well. The wealth of this small group of families and individuals – and their banking, corporate and foundational assets – must be in the hundreds of trillions, or so the speculation goes.

Ultimately Goldman Sachs is an organization, and one seemingly with a fairly high turnover. The participants in the firm, even the leaders, leave regularly to pursue other ventures (often in government unfortunately). But is it more than a tool of sorts? To imply or outright state, as this FireDogLake article seems to, that Goldman itself (or its "Jews") are responsible for planning most or all of the financial trouble in the world is questionable indeed.

The problem is not "the Jews" – certainly not in aggregate. ("The Jews," in most of their millions merely constitute more victims. One only has to look at the sad modern history of this people to see that.) The problem is not Goldman. The systemic problem is a power elite controlled system of mercantilism ... and the endless addition of more laws, more regulators, more enforcers, more police and more jails to save the West from its future economic and sociopolitical meltdown that only aggravate the calamity.

The progressive press, in our estimation, tries to blame individuals or certain corporations (Enron comes to mind, and now Goldman) to distract from the larger issue, which is the corruption of civil society itself by this horrid, pernicious mercantilism. The world (certainly the West), when one gets to know it – or has the misfortune of contemplating it for too long – is corrupt from top to bottom. The culture of corruption has been ongoing for at least a century or longer and has enveloped the world's international organizations and treaties, its corporations and even some of its private industry, its academies and think tanks of note, its military endeavors, its legislators and legislatures, its media and even much of the Internet (though not all thank goodness).

All of the entities just mentioned have become instruments of propaganda, at least to a degree. They seem to be tools – bought and paid for – to be wielded in the implementation of the power-elite's dominant social themes, the great, fear-based promotions that regularly sweep over the globe like vast, turgid surges of volcanic ash. Here's a suggestion: The idea that one firm (Goldman) or one small group of implementers (Goldman financiers) can be behind the Western world's woes is a distraction from serious analysis.

Woe to West, dear readers! The eloquent, existential angst of the 20th century (expressed by brilliant philosophers) was a direct result in our opinion of the visceral psychic comprehension that something had gone badly wrong with instrumentalities of civil society. No one knew, though many suspected. Money power was mentioned, but only in a whisper. Today, thanks to the Internet, it is in fact shouted about.

Conclusion: There is (just so we don't leave anyone in suspense) an Anglo-American elite with European roots, a supposed intermingling of royal and industrial families and Venetian bankers probably tracing their antecedents back to Rome and beyond, perhaps even apocryphally to Babylon. These families and individuals apparently believe they are born to rule and that normal human laws do not apply to them. They may have their own forms of worship, certainly their own exclusive customs, and likely don't work for a living (not in the traditional sense), not even at Goldman Sachs. If anything, Goldman Sachs works for them.

Thank you for elaborating on sociopathic behavior. Based on what you described, sociopaths appear to be synonymous with psychopaths. The former seems to be the social expression of the disease of the latter.

I encourage you to continue to explore this avenue as an opportunity to learn more about WHY the Elite follows the path of destruction it does. It may even help you in your predictions.

It's ironic the Power Elite want us all to live in a Nanny state, when nannies were what they experienced as a child.

You have used "sociopathic" frequently to describe behaviors of public officials and organizations, notably PM Brown in a recent article. How do you define sociopathic behavior?

Reply from The Daily Bell

You may disagree, of course, but we find the following seems to encapsulate the psychological profile of many drawn to public service in the modern era ...

Profile of the Sociopath ... (excerpt)

--------------------
http://www.mcafee.cc/Bin/sb.html
--------------------

Glibness and Superficial Charm ...

Manipulative and Conning
They never recognize the rights of others and see their self-serving behaviors as permissible. They appear to be charming, yet are covertly hostile and domineering, seeing their victim as merely an instrument to be used. They may dominate and humiliate their victims.

Grandiose Sense of Self
Feels entitled to certain things as "their right."

Pathological Lying
Has no problem lying coolly and easily and it is almost impossible for them to be truthful on a consistent basis. Can create, and get caught up in, a complex belief about their own powers and abilities. Extremely convincing and even able to pass lie detector tests.

Lack of Remorse, Shame or Guilt
A deep seated rage, which is split off and repressed, is at their core. Does not see others around them as people, but only as targets and opportunities. Instead of friends, they have victims and accomplices who end up as victims. The end always justifies the means and they let nothing stand in their way.

Shallow Emotions
When they show what seems to be warmth, joy, love and compassion it is more feigned than experienced and serves an ulterior motive. Outraged by insignificant matters, yet remaining unmoved and cold by what would upset a normal person. Since they are not genuine, neither are their promises.

Incapacity for Love ...

Need for Stimulation
Living on the edge. Verbal outbursts and physical punishments are normal. Promiscuity and gambling are common.

Callousness/Lack of Empathy
Unable to empathize with the pain of their victims, having only contempt for others' feelings of distress and readily taking advantage of them.

Poor Behavioral Controls/Impulsive Nature
Rage and abuse, alternating with small expressions of love and approval produce an addictive cycle for abuser and abused, as well as creating hopelessness in the victim. Believe they are all-powerful, all-knowing, entitled to every wish, no sense of personal boundaries, no concern for their impact on others.

snip--------------

Other Related Qualities:

Contemptuous of those who seek to understand them
Does not perceive that anything is wrong with them
Authoritarian
Secretive
Paranoid
Only rarely in difficulty with the law, but seeks out situations where their tyrannical behavior will be tolerated, condoned, or admired
Conventional appearance
Goal of enslavement of their victim(s)
Exercises despotic control over every aspect of the victim's life
Has an emotional need to justify their crimes and therefore needs their victim's affirmation (respect, gratitude and love)
Ultimate goal is the creation of a willing victim
Incapable of real human attachment to another
Unable to feel remorse or guilt
Extreme narcissism and grandiose
May state readily that their goal is to rule the world

(The above traits are based on the psychopathy checklists of H. Cleckley and R. Hare.)

With respect to the internet being too entrenched in daily life to shut down or constrict by the Power Elite, I agree wholeheartedly. Google isn't the only search engine in town. Type in a site directly and you get there. If they start DNS constriction, then workarounds will appear.

Remember powering up the internet with a Hayes modem and winsock? Then you connected to your ISPs bulletin board? Then all of a sudden the worldwide web took off like a rocket? There are more layers to the internet than a silly DNS constriction stopping you from talking and listening. Something as innocuous as Facebook can be used for "good". How about a nice subscription to a Daily Bell VPN?

That's the beauty of freedom and free thinking. They were one step ahead of us, now they are one step behind. They do not have the brain power to censor seemingly unrelated information, only the gathering points such as DB. It would be like a whack-a-mole game. Talk about tiring them out quickly.

With the speed of today's communication, things are moving faster than ever. I say turn off the TV and get on the net (sorry about preaching to the converted). The scales are tipping in our favour, but there's so much to learn and unlearn.

I had previously discounted the ancient Greek's impact on the evolution of the modern world, although I have always found their culture, theories and inventions intriguing. I had not heard of the Santori eruption causing the demise of the Minoans. I read up a little tonight, but it will be a while before I can properly add to your thoughts on the matter.

I do agree that if peaceful coexistence in a real free market driven economy had a chance to become entrenched early on, then bullies would have been ostracized by the masses.

The Greeks, Egyptians, Druids, Mayans, Freemasons and Ed Leedskalnin all built structures that were and are seemingly impossible to build. I find it interesting that these skills turn to dust when the bullies arrive and take people by the throat. Somewhat like John Galt and his generator.

Maybe that is why they are so angry with us. They hate us because inner peace is the only foundation for creating beauty and wealth.

There is also the theory that a percentage of people with great wealth grow up in odd circumstances without much interaction with their parents, etc. This makes them angry and somewhat sociopathic adults.

You hit it right on the head at the end of your article. Goldman is the agent for many hidden powers, and as such will take the heat. It is all layered, but not like an onion where the layers are easy to count. Instead I think of a bristle cone pine tree that has lived in the mountainside for 6000 years or so. During that time its been if fires, been hit by lightning, lost branches,. added branches. Now count the rings. Pretty difficult to do, though it can be done.

We must break the chain that binds us to the system that is destroying civilisation... There is a mystical bond that dulls the minds of the masses to their collective subjugation. The Matrix movie series attempted to point that out. It is something ancient and something evil.

Posted by RB on 05/17/10 07:02 PM

Kudos to DB for laying it on the line so plainly. You have identified the culprits by category, if not by name. We can fill in the rest on our own.

There exists a system of thought from which mercantilism springs and to which those with a predilection to that mindset are attracted. It has its emphasis in merchandising for influence and profit. Its origin is ancient (Isaiah 14:12-17; Ezekiel 28:15-16; Rev.18:3-13). Although the human controllers of this system are also its victims, it in no way excuses their participation

The glare of truth on any matter, including the elite, is the greatest discomfort we can bring to bear and DB is one of the searchlights.

@ G.Sign,

If we use the tactics of our tormentors, we are in danger of becoming like them, kind of like Guantanamo. This is a cosmically inspired problem and will have to be dealt with on that scale, ultimately. For now, the ball is in our court. We need a good coach!

BOTTOM LINE: The Wizards of Oz (the boys behind the curtain) are going to have to either (a) take over the Internet like they did America's MSM or, (b) at least, devise a scheme to control the information that goes on it if they want to continue their global scam.

Nowhere is there a better example of this than when the global warming town criers (the Climateers, Wizards, et al) were all caught red-handed at the Copenhagen Climate Conference trying to shove fake climate data, disinformation, propaganda, and lies down humanity's throat when a hacker posted their internal files, emails, correspondence and computer models/codes on the 'Net for "outside" climate experts to study and the world to read.

This had several ramifications. America's MSM at Copenhagen, for example, who were subsequently outed along with their bosses with their deafening silence about the global warming scam - the biggest hoax of this century so far - were caught flat-footed; got their so-called "journalistic" noses bloodied with their own lies (and lack of information about Climategate) and found themselves facing a fearsome, well-informed, 'Net competitor as well as outside climate experts who could hit back with fast, quick, truthful information; all posted on the 'Net for the world to read.

It set the criminals behind the curtain and their MSM on their heels.

Again.

That's when the Wizards of Oz had their recurring epiphany.

It was dawning on them that to further their agenda controlling the globe's food, fiber, water, minerals, money, land, information, people, jobs, hope, and their planned world government and currency they'd been maneuvering towards - in the secret manner they've been accustomed to lo these many decades, they were going to have to somehow take control of what was being fed onto the Internet and, failing that, the Internet itself.

For example, their end game had been to implement a global tax [climate tax] at Copenhagen to bankroll their world government scheme in the name of lowering the "dangerous green house gas" -CO2- that was causing the bergs to melt and the rolly polly bears to die.

You know, CO2. What plants thrive on.

What to do? Multiple 'Nets maybe? Censors strategically placed on 'Net gateways?

You know, like Wiki's keeper of the key for climate change data that Canada's National Post's Lawrence Solomon outed for reworking more than 5,000 articles submitted by legitimate climate researchers and scientists trying to correct Wikis false information. (Google: "Wikipedia's Climate Doctor" by Lawrence Solomon)

The Puppeteers are now on record as saying they ". . . wish they'd never given the public access to the 'Net."

I bet. They found out how expensive and cumbersome and uncertain trying to counter truth and the outing of their schemes, scams, and cons with trolls, hacks, disinformation, and extra propaganda really is.

What to do again?

Senators Jay Rockefeller (D-W.V.) and Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) introduced Senate Bill S.773 (The Cybersecurity Act of 2009) in April of 2009.

This bill would give the office of any sitting president the power to disconnect "critical" computer networks from the Internet if he/she/their handlers believe there is a ". . .risk of a cyberattack."

It languished until Copenhagen, after which S.773 was dusted off and floated once again in 2010.

If S.773 passes, a sitting president can order a shutdown of all Americans' access to the Internet. But that's not all. Even outside of periods of a White House-declared "cyberemergency," this bill mandates that private-sector networks only be managed by ". . .government-licensed cybersecurity professionals."

There is no one in the government with enough brains to manage, understand, or do what Google, Gates, and Jobs have done.

This "cyber emergency bill" is nothing more than a Trojan Horse that will be used in an attempt to control the 'Net's infomation.

Watch for Oz's attempt to do this. It will be another false flag event blamed on bogeymen like "terrorism" or "national security" or a "cyber attack."

The 'Net's free exchange of information - which is what these global criminals fear because it keeps exposing them - will be the "unavoidable collateral damage" when Oz makes his move; America's MSM having sold their souls to the money changers- the same financial crooks who control Congress today.

One more example of how the Internet has outed these crooks. The GM-industry - Monsanto, et al - are scared spitless right about now at the consumer steamroller barreling down their free-pass road they've had for the last 20 years to stuff dangerous, sterilizing drugs down humanity's throat with their genetically modified (GM) food.

The 'Net outed them and when and consumers found out how dangerous this food was, the began voting at the check-out counters with their pocketbooks. Big time. So much so that the organic food industry (read: GM-free food) is now the fastest growing, double digit consumer market America; Europe having already banned the junk.

Meanwhile, Whole Foods and other natural food outlets have initiated a non-GMO food labeling project on their own.

What to do?

The GMO ghouls rushed back to their WTO organization a week or so ago in an attempt to write a global law through their controlled Codex Alimentarius (Codex) and World Trade Organization (WTO) to make it illegal to tell consumers (through the non-GMO label) which food might make them sick, sterilized, or even kill them long-term if they kept eating it. (America has been operating in the dark "by design" about the dangers of GM food since, oh, about 1996, give or take a couple of years; at which time they began slipping it into the food chain.)

Again, the 'Net outed them at their non-GMO labeling meeting in Canada and they failed.

The same thing is happening with the demonization of the raw milk industry. The market is growing faster than a California brush fire. People are finding out, thanks to the Internet, about raw milk's value as a health food with side benefits the pasturized industry can neither match nor control.

Enter Big Dairy and their hormoned white liquid with little value other than money; slapping legislators on their backs while laying a little walking around money on them to help "solve" their problem.

The Wizards, though, are persistent. And you have to give them credit.

Did you know they've patented a pig and salmon?

Is this a great planet or what?

Reply from The Daily Bell

Very good! Eloquent. But we think it's way too late. It will take generations to repair the damage. There is nothing like an idea whose time has come. Would the US government simply shut down the 'Net? Almost every business in America is dependent on it, including major corporations. Same for Europe. Too late.

I agree whole heatedly with your conclusion. These elite consider themselves to be the only ones capable of ruling, and all the rest of us are just assets for them to use as they will. God will correct them eventually, when they stand before Him in judgment. As He says, " They have their reward."

I am rather bored of ascetic sceptics.

I like to believe, just for a minute, that a particular viewpoint being presented is true. For that is the only way to truly find something to be false. Once a little time passes, a little research is done, and some synaptic activity is expended, the truth will reveal its ugly self; or be confirmed with supporting evidence.

You are definitely rubbing some salt in their wounds with this article, judging by the supposed conspiracy theorist "hellfire" that came in from left field.

I, for one, only have support on my own previous research with your article. Nicely weaved by the way.

In my view, the Mesopotamians began the journey from the pinnacle of civilization (freedom), to where we are now (attempted slavery). It took upwards of 6000 years. The costumes and hairstyles may change, but the actors are the same.

Thankfully, your articles fly far above the madding crowd, so these little skirmishes are few and far between. Although I also would not like to be surrounded by yes-men, the depth of thinking that is needed to refute a proposition of yours had better be deeply thought out first, under penalty of embarrassment.

Or am I deluding myself?

Very good Weeble. We think the Western civ actually took a wrong turn some 4,000 years ago when Santori blew up, destroyed the brilliant, seafaring Minoan Atlanteans (no defensive fortifications have been found for this magnificent empire) and ushered in the age of the sullen and warlike Greek Thracians. How different civilization would have been (despite the enlightened Athenian Greeks later on) if that damn volcano had not blown up. The antecedents of Western civilization would perhaps have rested on free trade (and Goddess worship) rather than spears and spoils.

What a nice analyis you've written. Kudos! Goldman Sachs is only a part of the problem, and a small one at that. Hmm. However, it's the spot where we can flip the economic turtle and see its undersides and wiggling legs as it tries to recover itself.

Watching this Vanity Fair for forty years or so, I think maybe most of these economic debacles have been planned and implemented to create a one world government and for those who have the passion for it, to rule this tear laden planet. However, from what I know about leaders, I find this one world rule distasteful, repugnant, and odious and do reject the idea from the outset. Most of them behave very badly.

Not to be overly simplistic, but as a way out of this mess, maybe we should try Austrian economics instead of Keynesian robbery. Maybe our approach to money has been wrong for sixty years. Maybe we need to rid ourselves of the Fed and central banks. Cut off the easy money, and the creature dies. Wouldn't this lead to a more peaceful, just world?

Currencies with no real backing are like words with no clear definitions. They can mean anything those in control demand.
