Focus on the Policy, Not WikiLeaks

Tuesday, December 07, 2010 – by Ron Paul

Dr. Ron Paul

We may never know the whole story behind the recent publication of sensitive U.S. government documents by the Wikileaks organization, but we certainly can draw some important conclusions from the reaction of so many in government and media.

At its core, the Wikileaks controversy serves as a diversion from the real issue of what our foreign policy should be. But the mainstream media, along with neoconservatives from both political parties, insist on asking the wrong question. When presented with embarrassing disclosures about U.S. spying and meddling, the policy that requires so much spying and meddling is not questioned. Instead, the media focus on how so much sensitive information could have been leaked, or how authorities might prosecute the publishers of such information.

No one questions the status quo or suggests a wholesale rethinking of our foreign policy. No one suggests that the White House or the State Department should be embarrassed that the U.S. engages in spying and meddling. The only embarrassment is that it was made public. This allows ordinary people to actually know and talk about what the government does. But state secrecy is anathema to a free society. Why exactly should Americans be prevented from knowing what their government is doing in their name?

In a free society, we are supposed to know the truth. In a society where truth becomes treason, however, we are in big trouble. The truth is that our foreign spying, meddling, and outright military intervention in the post-World War II era has made us less secure, not more. And we have lost countless lives and spent trillions of dollars for our trouble. Too often "official" government lies have provided justification for endless, illegal wars and hundreds of thousands of resulting deaths and casualties.

Take the recent hostilities in Korea as only one example. More than fifty years after the end of the Korean War, American taxpayers continue to spend billions for the U.S. military to defend a modern and wealthy South Korea. The continued presence of the U.S. military places American lives between the two factions. The U.S. presence only serves to prolong the conflict, further drain our empty treasury, and place our military at risk.

The neoconservative ethos, steeped in the teaching of Leo Strauss, cannot abide an America where individuals simply pursue their own happy, peaceful, prosperous lives. It cannot abide an America where society centers around family, religion, or civic and social institutions rather than an all powerful central state. There is always an enemy to slay, whether communist or terrorist. In the neoconservative vision, a constant state of alarm must be fostered among the people to keep them focused on something greater than themselves – namely their great protector, the state. This is why the neoconservative reaction to the Wikileaks revelations is so predictable: "See, we told you the world was a dangerous place," goes the story. They claim we must prosecute – or even assassinate – those responsible for publishing the leaks. And we must redouble our efforts to police the world by spying and meddling better, with no more leaks.

We should view the Wikileaks controversy in the larger context of American foreign policy. Rather than worry about the disclosure of embarrassing secrets, we should focus on our delusional foreign policy. We are kidding ourselves when we believe spying, intrigue, and outright military intervention can maintain our international status as a superpower while our domestic economy crumbles in an orgy of debt and monetary debasement.

I agree with this article, as a THINKING person. However, far too many people refused to think ... or even READ, for that matter. You probably exceeded the attention span of many Americans by the time you began the third paragraph.

The words of sanity. The last sentence is the perfect conclusion to this beautifully articulated thought. Your honesty is revered.
Thank You, Dr. Paul

The leaked material seems akin to the notes secretly passed between giggling students in a classroom, only to be suddenly confiscated by the teacher. Note content? Sophomoric gossip and innuendo embarassing only to the ones generating it. No real harm done.

Indeed, the mindless meddling of USA foreign policy makers seems amateurish at best, and at worst, contradictory to the concept of liberty and self-determination. All politicians need a "crisis" to solve, real or imagined, foreign or domestic. We the people have too long been bullied by fear mongering, too easily relinquishing our personal liberty for safety. To paraphrase Franlkin, we have become neither safe or free.

But the ruse is not working so well. Botched foreign escapades, a collapsing economic system, and the great democracy of the Internet are sending the cockroaches scurrying.

I look forward to Dr. Paul's continued ruminations, and his efforts to unmask the perfidity of the Federal Reserve. He is Jefferson of the 21st century.

You make too much sense Dr. Paul. Educate the masses. The political elite want to silence you, I am sure. Good luck with finding out if there is Gold in Ft. Knox, and ending the FED.

One must not confuse authentic, which the cables in question most likely are, with factually accurate, which they most certainly are not. The mainstream press are focusing on opinion rather than unbiased observation.

I so completely agree with you Dr. Paul. A republic, with people such as yourself at the helm, is probably the best form of government on the planet.

GREAT article !

Thank you, Dr Paul, for putting this issue into it's proper perspective.

As Stewart said... thanks for being a voice of logic and reason in a political world gone mad.

Seems strange that Wiki never releases anything about the left, except Hillary of course, however, Wiki's founder Assage should be released. Puzzling that he turned himself in....why would he do that? Is it to save his own life? What is going to be released next? Could it be Obama's documents that Barry so feverishly hides? Maybe he thinks jail is the safest place to be if he does have that information to release.

Here's an interesting article that voices the dilemma that Ron Paul may well soon face. I hope Ron Paul is up to the task but I fear as he is a politician he will capitulate.

My guess is that you refined your initial blunt efforts, Amslave, and added/subtracted some modifications/improvements. Or you have a hacked/watched/spooked/ Internet Service, if you are one of those "angry young men" types with a certain passion for propagandaing/creating a ripple in seas of colossal waves ..... which is another guess which may or may not be right. The important thing to remember though, is that it is all so possible, and whenever possible, does it be more probable than unlikely and impossible.

Thanks for the links though. Is the dollar collapse, payback time for the US support of the earlier misguided Nazi war machine, which appears to have morphed into a US Military Industrial Complex with Departments of Defense which are geared for Attack and Blitzkriegs....... Shock and Awe Exercises and Wars of Terror against ....... well, if they are not military installations then they are civilian targets, and that is a Supreme Crime in any Court and Jurisdiction?

How that beautiful, honorable, thoughtful man has managed to return every two years to the fetid swamp of the Den of Charlatans is beyond me. Thank you, Dr. Paul, for your willingness to repeatedly enter the District of Cluelessness to speak for the few Americans who still cherish liberty and independence.

Dr. Paul,

As a veteran, I thank you for your unwavering service and I respectfully Salute You, Sir!!!
But I also know realistically that if U are ever elected and continue to implement your policies
and present views without caving in to the Mighty Military and the Zionist Cancer in Congress,
like Obama is presently doing, you most likely will not survive much more than a year, or so, in office.

I've proudly voted for U in 2008 and if I'll survive, I'll vote for U again in 2012 ... ;)

Sadly the intriguing resemblance to what is NOW happening in America begs the question:

" Is it time to say, "FINIS AMERICAE" ? .... :(

Dear Dr. Paul: Excellent points. What sort of policy compels immoral behaviour? In the name of security the state justifies, and convincingly to many of our friends, any act, including murder, which serves its own council. Its machinations can in this world never be expiated. Keep fighting the good fight.

Have you ever watched a new born baby puff up turn red and cry out in anger. We are selfish by nature so are nations hence we are at war, be it overt or covert.

We must keep our game plan to our selves or else we lose. Nice guys finish last is a saying for a reason, you can not fight a war nice.Football coaches hide behind their play cards so that lip readers can not disclose the play.

I like most of what Ron Paul says but in this case get real. Until the world changes you must take the fight to your opponent or else he will bring it to you. This is written on 7 Dec.10.....Remember not to let your guard down.

Should the US attack China too? How about Iran? Maybe Yemen? How about Syria? Some of those funny African countries ... Please, be specific. How many millions of people should the US wage war against at any one time? ... Is there any goddamn limit?
