Who is he: Peter Schiff is CEO and Chief Global Strategist of Euro Pacific Capital and one of the few non-biased investment advisors (not committed solely to the short side of the market) to have correctly called the current bear market before it began and to have positioned his clients accordingly. As a result of his accurate forecasts on the US stock market, economy, real estate, the mortgage meltdown, credit crunch, subprime debacle, commodities, gold and the dollar, he has become increasingly well-known and followed by the media.
Peter Schiff has been quoted in many of the nation's leading newspapers, including The Wall Street Journal, Barron's, Die Zeit, Tokyo Shinbut, South China Morning Post, Investor's Business Daily, The Financial Times, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, The Chicago Tribune, The Christian Science Monitor and many others. Peter is the host of the syndicated talk radio program, The Peter Schiff Show, broadcast coast to coast and online. Schiff is also a contributing commentator for Newsweek International and served as an economic advisor to the 2008 Ron Paul presidential campaign and ran unsuccessfully for the US Senate in Connecticut in 2010.
Peter Schiff's fourth book was published in May of 2012, entitled The Real Crash − America's Coming Bankruptcy. His 2007 best-seller, Crash Proof: How to Profit from the Coming Economic Collapse, was updated as Crash Proof 2.0: How to Profit From the Economic Collapse in 2011. The Little Book of Bull Moves in Bear Markets: How to Keep Your Portfolio Up When the Market is Down (2009) was followed by How an Economy Grows and Why It Crashes in 2010, co-authored with his brother, Andrew Schiff. An expert on money, economic theory and international investing, Schiff appears regularly on CNBC, CNN, Fox News, Fox Business Network and Bloomberg TV.
Background: Peter Schiff grew up in New Haven, Connecticut and attended the University of California, Berkeley, from which he graduated with a degree in finance and accounting in 1987. Schiff went to work for Shearson Lehman Brothers as a broker but then in 1996 purchased a small brokerage with a partner. It was renamed Euro Pacific Capital and has grown into an enterprise with thousands of clients and six offices nationwide.
Peter attributes his success to his free-market thinking philosophy and an understanding of the Austrian School of Economics. Schiff says he became aware of the school through his father, Irwin Schiff, the tax protestor who is now in jail.
In his famous 2007 book, Crash Proof, Schiff made the case that the United States is out of control fiscally and economically. Subsequent events have proved him correct. Schiff has argued − correctly, from the point of view of free-market proponents − that the US needs to emphasize productivity and return to an asset-based model of money. Schiff attributes much of the current difficulty in America and the West to a flawed model of mercantilist central banking and is an advocate of private banking in which the government is not involved.
