Biography
Robert Oulds
Who is he: Robert Oulds is the Director of the Bruges Group. The Bruges Group is an independent all-party think tank. Oulds himself describes the Bruges Group as a "leading Eurosceptic cross-party think-tank aiming to reform the European Union and end the drive towards the single European State."
Set up in February 1989, its aim was to promote the idea of a less centralized European structure rather than that emerging in Brussels. Its inspiration was Margaret Thatcher's Bruges speech in September 1988, in which she remarked, "We have not successfully rolled back the frontiers of the state in Britain only to see them re-imposed at a European level."
Today, The Bruges Group is working to take Britain out of the European Union. Oulds became involved with the Bruges Group as a Masters level student. As an independent all-party think tank, the Bruges Group has forged links with Members of Parliament as well as with similarly minded groups in other countries through its groundbreaking publications and wide-ranging discussions.
Robert Oulds continues to fight against British involvement in a single European state. Oulds and the Bruges Group also hold regular public meetings, seminars, debates and conferences, which create a platform that enables influential speakers to contribute to the European debate.
Oulds aims to promote discussion on the European Union and to advance the education of the public on European affairs. Oulds and the Bruges Group's research also explores alternative international relationships and policies. Oulds seeks to equip politicians, key opinion-formers and the media with information for a complete restructuring of Britain's relationship with other European countries.
Background: Robert Oulds has a degree in Politics and a Master's degree in Communications Management. In addition to his duties at the Bruges Group, Oulds has been a Conservative Councilor in Chiswick since 2002 and an international political analyst who has made a specialty of analyzing and opposing the European Union and its political propaganda.
