Kevin Owen
Who is he: Kevin Owen is a highly respected on-air television personality for the RT Network, who won the TEFI "Best News Anchor" award in 2008, and has also worked in radio and voice-over. The RT Network was formerly known as Russia Today, but has been reformatted in terms of global content and the impact it has on regions other than Russia.
Before being based in Moscow, Owen had worked as a news presenter and anchor in the United Kingdom for over 20 years. Most of his training has been on the job, as his journalism education is not extensive. However, he did earn a postgraduate Diploma in Journalism from Cardiff University's School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies. Cardiff is the capital of Wales and its largest city.
Background: Kevin Owen was born in Plymouth, Kent, England, an area about 200 miles southwest of London and historically a significant shipping port for many centuries, which currently has a population of roughly 250,000.
Owen began his career on the BBC Wales television show "Wales Today." Kevin Owen moved next to HTV Wales commercial television before later accepting presenter positions at both HTV West in Bristol and Channel Television, a British station serving as an independent contractor to the Channel Islands.
Owen also ventured into the radio interview and news format while hosting his own show at Orchard FM and for several years in talk radio, including BBC World Service. He has done various voice-overs and narrations as associate work. Between 2001 and 2006 Owen was a central news anchor at the very popular Sky News. It was at Sky News that Owen developed his personal brand that continues to earn him respected status today. Kevin Owen is one of the primary and most highly recognizable announcers for RT Network.
During the years Kevin Owen has been anchor with RT, since 2006, he has covered a number of significant stories including the plane crash in which the Polish president was killed, the 2008 war in the Caucasus, the G8 Summit in St. Petersburg, Russian presidential elections and more.
Owen was honored in 2008 in Russia with the presentation of the TEFI award, which is the designation as Russia's "News Anchor of the Year." He is the first foreign broadcaster to have ever received the prize since its establishment in 1995 and is a tribute to the content and directional changes that Russia Today has implemented in the transition to RT Network and utilization of the contemporary broadcast platforms available to the general population from broadcasters. Kevin Owen has been an essential part of RT Network growth and development for the past five years.
