Break up the Corporations

By Staff Report
23

The 147 Companies That Control Everything ... Visualizing the "super entity." ... Three systems theorists at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich have taken a database listing 37 million companies and investors worldwide and analyzed all 43,060 transnational corporations and share ownerships linking them. They built a model of who owns what and what their revenues are and mapped the whole edifice of economic power. They discovered that global corporate control has a distinct bow-tie shape, with a dominant core of 147 firms radiating out from the middle. Each of these 147 own interlocking stakes of one another and together they control 40% of the wealth in the network. A total of 737 control 80% of it all. Forbes

Dominant Social Theme: There is no great private conspiracy to run the world. It's just a bunch of corporations. Blame capitalist greed, but don't ever blame the great central banking families. They don't even exist.

Free-Market Analysis: The Internet is aflame with conspiracy theories about a small group of impossibly wealthy central banking families and their enablers and associates. These include corporate, religious, financial and military personnel. Now this same power elite has, in our view, struck back with a meme of its own. Yes, power is centralized, but it's CORPORATE power. Corporations are to blame.

This is, endlessly, a strategy seized from the same weary playbook, offered up over and over again. Occupy Wall Street is mad, in aggregate, at corporations. Washington, DC's Senator Bernie Sanders (see other article this issue) believes there is too much corporate control over the Fed; determined sleuth and master journo Matt Taibbi makes Goldman Sachs the chief culprit and "vampire squid" of corporate malfeasance.

But this is an entirely incorrect reading of the world. There is in our view a cadre of elite central banking families and no matter how much their brain-trust tries to distract us from the truth, it is too late for that. The Internet Reformation gallops on apace, providing truth-telling about the way the world really works.

The Rothschilds, for instance, along with other central banking families evidently and obviously run the BIS and other central banking paraphernalia. The Rothschilds virtually created Israel and built its Knesset and Supreme Court building, with all its Illuminati symbolism.

We are supposed to believe this family and others like them are mere bystanders – puppets of the corporations in which they actually hold massive private interests and actively run? Of course, our paradigm doesn't just include Jewish families. As many have noted (not always kindly) we believe that Jewish banking families are only part of the problem. There is industry and military involvement, too.

We have regularly noted religious involvement in the power elite as well. By religious involvement we mean the Black Church – the Jesuit-influenced movement toward one world government that is clearly part of the Church's current makeup.

The conspiracy to control the world, in fact, is housed in Rome, Israel, Washington, DC and most of all, London's City. Not surprisingly, three of these locations are in areas immune to the larger countries' laws and enforcement thereof. They are indeed a law unto themselves.

You won't find that out from Forbes, however, which has reported (along with the rest of the mainstream media) on a New Scientist survey of corporate ownership that shows about 150 corporate entities control 40 percent of the world's corporate wealth.

This is, say the paper's authors (according to Forbes), the first map of the structure of global corporate control. Well, whoopee. It may be a map, but in reality it's just another attempt to muddy the issue. It's like proposing that Barack Obama or Angela Merkel or Nikolas Sarkozy are in charge of their respective states. They are not. They're elected, but their orders come from a much higher place. Here's some more from the Forbes article:

Such structures occur commonly in biology, things like fungus, lichen and weeds. Economists say the danger comes when you combine hyperconnection with the concentration of power. The Swiss scientists warn that this can lead to an unstable environment. No Scheisse, Sherlock. But the web of corporate control is not de facto a conspiracy of world domination.

There are many reasons for tightly bundled nodes and connections: anti-takeover strategies, reduction of transaction costs, risk sharing, increasing trust and groups of interest. A few caveats with the data set: It excludes GSEs and privately-held companies and is dominated by banks, institutional investors and mutual funds that don't always have much in the way of control over assets ...

A better list would be the actual asset OWNERS, rather than the vendors who manage, house and clear said assets." See the top 50 on the control list at the New Scientist. One of the co-authors, Dr. James Glattfelder, says he will be publishing next week the bigger list of 737 companies that control 80% of the global economy. The 147 are included in that group.

Yes, a better list WOULD be of asset owners. But you won't find one. The founder of the Rothschild dynasty put it into his will – control is to be extended via a network of secretive, private, interlocking trusts. At this point it would take an effort even larger than the present one to figure out what the Rothschilds and other central banking families own – even if you could gain access to the information. And you can't.

Jews do not "run the world" – or certainly not by themselves. The power nexuses include political and industry leaders, military men and even portions of the religious establishment of the Roman Catholic Church. Church leaders, in fact, just proposed a worldwide central bank and global securities tax. Defenders of the Church tell us this is an anomalous event. You think?

We don't buy off on the meme of the evil, Zionist Jew, either. We would tend to categorize this as yet another promotional meme of the elite – that Israeli Zionists runs the world. Those who talk this way are inevitably branded as anti-Semites, their sentiments devalued, their credibility undermined. And that's the plan, isn't it? Impossibly powerful "Jewish" central banking families have ensured the effectiveness of this meme over the past 50 years.

Conclusion: These families hire other Jews the way the Mafia hires Italians. Like to like. There is no difference in the way business is done, however. The same extortion, murder and even mass murder are employed. The difference is that the Mafia is not trying to blame its deeds and misdeeds on corporate malfeasance. It's a dominant social theme ... but not one that will stick in this era of Internet truth-telling. Too bad for the big families. Better for us.

There seems to be much general agreement about the history of the House of Rothschild and how they made their money. Further, there seems to be general agreement that the Rothschilds financed Cecil Rhodes originally, and it was, initially through him, that the current elites' road to power was launched. This was soon taken over after his death by Lord Milner et al., who deserves, perhaps, the most notice in this regard (see Carroll Quigley's book).

What I am wondering is to what extent what is going on now is the direct working out of these original people's plans? and how much, if any, it has transmogrified over the decades into what we have now? Because Rhodes himself wanted and envisioned a triumph of Britain over the whole World via its Empire. His was a real anglophile's view of the World. I am unclear to what extent this aim of Rhodes' was already being changed by the time of Milner et al.? And then from there to maybe this New World Order. I don't think Rhodes wanted a One World Government as such. Did the original Round Table?

I know this is too big a question for this venue, but I would appreciate anyone directing to me further resources that might anwser this question. I am writing an essay on this subject and am a bit stuck right now in this area.

Thanks!

Here's a thought that doesn't seem to get much consideration or circulation: Do away with the corporate form. All businesses must set themselves up as either sole proprietorships or partnerships. No more fictitious legal "persons" which shield actual real persons from full accountability for their actions. This is a government-granted favor which--well, need I say more? That's all you really need to know.

I think it's important to look more deeply at your statements, NAPpy, because there's the beginning of some truth there.

Many good people in society might choose voluntarily to use the services of a banker, and so long as the dealing was honest on both sides there would be no harm. Therefore, to pass laws that ban a certain type of banking would be to steal freedoms from many honest people. The people who support passage of the laws become oppressors at the same time as they claim to be liberators, and the vicious spiral continues as freedom is stolen bit-by-bit every day as ignorant do-gooders pretend they're helping people by stealing freedom. On every issue, the politically-strongest mob makes the law and imposes their inhibitions and judgments on everyone, enforced to the death if necessary. We call this "democracy". A more accurate term would be "universal plunder" (from "The Law" by Frederic Bastiat).

Absolutely, government cannot grant, deliver, or provide freedom. Freedom is the natural state, without organized oppression, and we recognize this via common law, which exists irregardless of the presence of government. Anything and everything government does by force is oppression and robbery, and it's still oppression and robbery if a mob is the perpetrator rather than a lone dictator.

Your expression of anger about feeling oppressed is genuine, and warranted, but I challenge you to look more deeply at who's to blame. I think we could agree that if all banking were voluntary, and we could opt out of any deal if we discovered fraud, and recover damages if justified, we wouldn't have reason to be upset about banking. People who don't understand basic math would continue to give a portion of their wealth to bankers in exchange for instant gratification, and people who chose to abstain wouldn't be harmed in any way.

But obviously that's not the present reality, because banking and government are one. Participation is mandatory, and limitless government force is used to prevent any escape. You'll pay the bankers through taxes, inflation, mandatory insurance, and a thousand other ways, because democratic government forces you to. Your friends and family, neighbors and co-workers all support the idea that you should be forced to comply with "the law", even if it means that your house is taken, you're imprisoned, or even killed if you resist, and it wouldn't matter if it was over a $10 tax bill you felt you shouldn't have to pay.

Of course, the popular way to avoid these inconvenient truths is to claim that the bankers are masters of manipulation and control everyone else like puppets on strings. By some dark, powerful magic they've got billions of people's free will on remote control, directing them to serve as their advocates and victims at the same time. The helpless people want to be free, but are forced to call for the passage of endless new, oppressive laws that steal from everyone they know and murder those who resist.
Really?

It's the classic "Neurenberg excuse"; "he made me do it, and I was so scared I didn't even know it was wrong... "

What few have the guts to admit is that we all have a mix of fears inside that makes for a potential tyrant, and most will quickly join in oppression. In fact, virtually everyone does, every day. It enables people to feel safe, part of a successful group, and more powerful. It's the most powerful, and most prolific drug of all. Virtually all of us are users, yet almost none will admit it. It's the few kingpins at the top who are to blame for all of the suffering created by the masses brutalizing each other every minute of every day...

This is the "deal with the devil" that's so often discussed metaphorically but so seldom understood. It's the devil inside, our own fears, our own willingness to walk over others for the promise of higher status and an easier life, that we make the deal with every day. When we've become so acclimated to that way of life that we can't see the reason for our suffering, and we blame the results rather than the causative decision, we're really stuck... ; some might call it Hell.

So long as this is the "normal" way of being for the masses, there is no way to real justice. Those few who've chosen their inner light over their inner monkey brain, and come to understand the complex workings of humanity, must find ways to accept the outer reality and live quietly and peacefully within it. Learn to appreciate that you are finding truth and freeing your own mind. The rest of the world doesn't need to follow in order for you to find freedom.

It's OK to be angry upon learning that such corruption dominates when we are capable of so much better. But it serves us well to be honest and fair when directing our anger: at everyone who's participated; everyone. Then we can begin to see that blame doesn't get us anywhere, and we can direct our energy toward finding still-deeper truth that really can set us free.

These are the services I would consider essential and would voluntarily pay for:

1. Warehousing of precious metals
2. Clearing operations
3. Lending of real savings
4. Brokering between those who need to expand business and those with savings

"... for their services are a necessity in any human community, in our world at least."

Modern finance doesn't provide the services that I listed above that I would voluntarily pay for. Modern finance does the following:

1. Immoral legal tender laws, creating a 2 tier system between those that already own precious metals, and the average joe
2. Immoral fractional reserve banking, without explicit contracts
3. Legalized and coercively enforced federal reserve cartel
4. Lending money they don't have, while using real property as collateral
5. Clearing elite gold, but only clearing paper for the masses
6. Legalizing investment cartels and promoting pro-big business financial regulations to hinder small business competition

"The so called conspiracy re "elite" control of the world's financial systems is just an expression of universal aghast re a remarkable group of people who follow no religion per se, but do believe in the ability of numbers to provide answers re the mystery of life."

Really? I'd say I have more than angst when a system I have no control over steals taxes from me, inhibits moral behavior through unjust regulation, and steals purchasing power via inflation. The owners of the current system enable theft and murder on a scale, and over a long enough people, that they will be famous throughout history as monsters who put Hitler and Mao to shame. Pol Pot was an amateur. Genghis Khan was a kid in a sand box. The sheer immorality of the owners of central banks will be whispered about in awe for thousands of years.

What does that tell you about the mystery of life?

Posted by nithsdale on 10/29/11 12:06 AM

The so called conspiracy re "elite" control of the world's financial systems is just an expression of universal aghast re a remarkable group of people who follow no religion per se, but do believe in the ability of numbers to provide answers re the mystery of life. The ancient annals refer to a group of young jewish men who were caught up in a new wave of thinking that was intoduced from the Arabic world. new symbols for numbers very much at odds with the roman system. This new "thing" was a game and it spread like wildfire through the youth of the period, that same time frame that produced Christ. It was such a problem that the leaders of jewry declared it heretical and demanded the expulsion of those who continued to be involved.

The young rebels had common cause with arab youths and chose to continue with them, bolstered by the discovery they were better at it than the originators. This was recognized by their teachers and so place was found fot these new players. In time they proved their worth for they became the logistical mentors for the Moors as they swept from Middle East across North Africa, into Spain and Portugal. It was their job to have everything in place for the hordes to move on the next foray into empire!

The Iberian Peninsula proved to be the farthest extent that the Moors could govern and in time, the actual government there became the province of these heretic jewish remnants. Their new position gave their name -Sephardim-a special credence.

These people had arrived. They served their Moors well and were allowed unprecedented freedom and then authority. Dynasties were established based on familial relationships and one jewish "tribe" had arrived at a world position none of the others had enjoyed.

All was right with their world until a trader by the name of Mohammed made his appearance on the world stage. At first, the Sephardim thought to serve the new Islam as it had the older Arab beliefs but the new admonition that all had to be converted or else, although thought to be a bargaining point, proved to be a real dicta. What to do? Give up freedoms, become part of another herd? These masters of numbers looked about. Northern Europe had been the prize once of the Moors but after looking at the problems, they had backed off. The Sephardim took another look.

Europe was in upheaval. Judaism was long gone from the sephardic world, just a reminder of what had spawned their group once, a long time ago. Another jewish heretic, Christ, in death was now the Lord of a different religion well integrated north of the Pyrennees but having problems. Catholic Christianity had expanded but was now facing the emergence of states headed by lords of a different world, each anxious to prove they were better than the other, at war not belief! Beset by this new issue, the Church needed a new direction to keep its position from deteriorating under the onslaught of the secular.

The Sephardim had a great ability to offer the Papacy. Whereas it was forbidden to Christians (as it was also in Islam) to play with income ideas re credit, interest, insurance, admonitions from the old and new bible segments, these were the elements with which the Sephardim had carved out their unique position and services to the Moors, providing a constant stream of capital for that civilization's advances. Since the Sephardim now faced the extinction of their genius, their craft by forced conversion to Islam, well they would prefer to offer their services to the Papacy instead, if there was no forced conversion there. They wanted to keep their profession re credit, interest and insurance promotions, so they would hire out their services to those who could not in good conscience, use them!

All this is a matter of historical evidence. The Sephardim brought to the Papacy table the ability to increase the capital of the church to better equip it to handle the young upstarts now threatening its very existence.
The deal was made in several well documented councils and so the numbers game came to Europe with full imprimatur from the Vicar of Christ himself and his Collegiate Cardinals!

This group of gameplayers traveled all over Europe with special credentials, wheeling and dealing, their passion and in time did exactly what they envisioned and the church wanted. Their nobility grew as their influence grew, and hostility also since in an area where all were vassals unto the small lord above them and could not move, these people came with great trains and had freedom of movement denied all others.

Anti Semiticism began here since any small lord who could not pay his ecclesiatical dues to the papacy would just inflame his people against these hated "jews" who had crucified Christ! The Sephardim and their trains came to collect those dues and many were punished terribly for doing so.

The Sephardim had a unique but quite united position when the papacy ruled the Western World but once again it faced another loss of vocation when the Reformation began against the Church. Half of Europe was going and no one could stop it. Again the numbergameplayers looked at the odds and came up with a solution. Some of the more adventurous members would go with the Reformers. serve them as they served the papacy and always keep in touch.

There is no need to go further with this exposition since the reader should get the gist. Conspiracy is not possible with such a network. Cooperation is what occurred. That there are cons, even defrauders from time to time is human frailty, but the Sephardim go on, driven by their mastery of numbers, statistics et al! The Industrial Age was their creation.

The Sephardim serve the leaders of the West as the need for resources arrives and must be met, one way or another. They face attack continually but they are usually shielded from anhilation for their services are a necessity in any human community, in our world at least.

I concur that Occupy Wall Streeters are "anti-semitic", just like the Frankish nobles were during the building of Europe and for exactly the same reasons! Funny thing is the Sephardim are no longer heretics from jewry, they have intermarried so much, come from so many national origins, it is a joke!

Great points!

Stefan Molyneux argues that individual corruption starts in the family. Is it ok for a husband to hit his wife? Is it ok for a mother or father to hit their kid? Hitting a wife is called spousal abuse. Hitting a defenseless child is called "spanking"! See any hypocrisy there? Just speaking personally, phrases like "do as I say, not as I do", "just shut up and do it", "if you don't like it you can leave", "wait until your father gets home", "because I said so", "this is a dictatorship, not a democracy", and "don't ask questions" were a regular occurence in the lives of me and my friends.

Then, the child is subjected through still more abuse through 12 years of forced indoctrination in public schools.

If this is the hypocrisy, violence, and modeling of non-negotiation that most children are exposed to at an early age, is it any wonder that society is corrupt?

Posted by NAPpy on 10/28/11 09:48 PM

Ending legal tender laws would end central banks, and would do so as a slow process, minimizing transitional pain, IMHO.

Posted by Lamb on 10/28/11 05:27 PM

The fiat money system has been so successful in modern times because it capitalizes on the mass human desire to get something for nothing. The banker would be nothing without the masses of equally-corrupt individuals who want his wares. The banker is expected to know he's acting immorally, but the rest of the population are just victims, not knowing that the scheme was immoral and irrational from the start. Quite a double standard...
If we can be rational, it becomes quite obvious that the corruption is pervasive, across social and economic lines, and that given the corruption of the citizenry, there are limitless ways that vices will be exploited. Get rid of fiat currency by some new laws, and the ten thousand other equally-corrupt schemes will fill the void.
By believing that coercive government can restore society to morality or righteousness, we unconsciously join the anti-liberty forces by buying into the idea that institutionalized denial of liberty, backed up by limitless violence, can be righteous. Our own moral compass ends up as twisted as that of the banker and the bureaucrat.
By blaming bankers, or fiat currency, or politicians, or even the seeming dictator, we indulge our own corrupt desires. There seems to be no end to our love for passing off personal responsibility, which is exactly why the banker/politician type have such a field day.

Hi Hoss,

Love the Daily Bell!

Re the banks, corporations, governments, 'power elite' etc. ie., the world we live in today : Am a being a simpleton in saying that the solution to most of the world's ills is to end central banking, fiat currencies, and fractional reserve banking.

If the world returns to a system of honest money all of the phony (read : banker construct) industries, wars, imbalances, malinvestments etc. would collapse. The 'elite' still would own major industries and incredible wealth but the crony capitalism funded by money from nothing would end. The power of bankers over governments would end as well. Bankers have reduced human life to that of animals and have managed to frame all aspects of life around profit and competition.

The propaganda fed us through their media and educational systems have brainwashed many of us. We're not animals we're spiritual beings and the end of the bankster control over the world would spell the beginning of a human renaissance, one of cooperation, self sufficiency, localism, and the acknowledgement of our true nature - spiritual beings. The moral decay, selfishness, shallowness and shameless materialism, along with the idea of 'if it feels good, do it', or 'there are no consequences to bad actions or decisions' would also end.

The one and only measure of any politician anywhere is do they support ending central banking and restoring honest money or not.

Vote Ron Paul !!!

"Then, one day, you realise that this thing that has formed the core of your life is absolutely false. What do you do?"

Yes this is the BIG question. What do WE do? Maybe more time could be spent on this topic since the only apparent outcome (that I can see) is either a quick death by lead poisoning or a slow death locked in a cage, with the former being preferable. We understand the problems even if most don't and never will. It's beyond time to start developing real solutions/alternatives.

And I think, for most of us, leaving is not a viable option.

It should be clearly understood that corporations are entities created by government for the specific purpose of granting the entitled persons priviledges/advantages that they wouldn't have as individuals. Corporations are vehicles for rooting and insulating priviledge; in other words, vehicles for legal market-fixing; nothing else. They are the vehicle for the creation of all "private sector" monopolies, yet there is no such thing as a private-sector monopoly; all monopolies spring from government. What we call "private-sector" monoplies are actually government/private partnerships.
We accept corporations as sane only because of the inconsistent, relative morality that dominates modern culture. Little of what passes for conventional truth is actually rational...
The lords of the world and the slaves each hold an equal share of the conscious matrix that makes the world what it is, and they each need the other in order to exist. All each of us needs to do is wake up, and everything will be just as it should be...

1. Governments often have no liability for their actions. They may lie, steal, murder, etc. and they are always immune.

2. Whatever is wrong with limited liability corporations? So long as it is a voluntary arrangement, there is nothing wrong there.

And to put it another way:

[Adolf Hitler on Nazism and socialism:] 'Each activity and each need of the individual will thereby be regulated by the party as the representative of the general good. There will be no license, no free space, in which the individual belongs to himself. This is Socialism-not such trifles as the private possession of the means of production. Of what importance is that if I range men firmly within a discipline they cannot escape? Let them then own land or factories as much as they please. The decisive factor is that the State, through the party, is supreme over them, regardless whether they are owners or workers. All that, you see, is unessential. Our Socialism goes far deeper . . . .

'The people about us are unaware of what is really happening to them. They gaze fascinated at one or two familiar superficialities, such as possessions and income and rank and other outworn conceptions. As long as these are kept intact, they are quite satisfied. But in the meantime they have entered a new relation; a powerful social force has caught them up. They themselves are changed. What are ownership and income to that? Why need we trouble to socialize banks and factories? We socialize human beings.'

The 'Fondo'

A pillar of the oligarchical system is the family fortune, or fondo, as it is called in Italian, fund in amglish. The continuity of the family fortune which earns money through usury and looting is often more important than the biological continuity across generations of the family that owns the fortune. In Venice, the largest fondo was the endowment of the Basilica of St. Mark, which was closely associated with the Venetian state treasury, and which absorbed the family fortunes of nobles who died without heirs. This fondo was administered by the procurers of St. Mark, whose position was one of the most powerful under the Venetian system. Around this central fondo were grouped the individual family fortunes of the great oligarchical families, such as the Mocenigo, the Cornaro, the Dandolo, the Contarini, the Morosini, the Zorzi, and the Tron. Until the end of the Eighteenth century, the dozen or so wealthiest Venetian families had holdings comparable or superior to the very wealthiest families anywhere in Europe. When the Venetian oligarchy transferred many of its families and assets to northern Europe, the Venetian fondi provided the nucleus of the great Bank of Amsterdam, which dominated Europe during the Seventeenth century, and of the Bank of England, which became the leading bank of the Eighteenth century.

This concentration of money and power winds like a snake thru history with religion in center. Pharaoh Akhenaten tried to break up corrupted system of Hyksos priests. Gracchi bros promoted land reform and angered corrupted senators aka landloards.
Finally, Marx also mentions the fear and reverence bankers inspire in everyone. He cites the following ironic words of G.M. Bell:

"The knit brow of the banker has more influence over him than the moral preaching of his friends; does he not tremble to be suspected of being guilty of fraud or of the least false statement, for fear of causing suspicion, in consequence of which his banking accommodation might be restricted or cancelled? The advice of the banker is more important to him than that of the clergyman. (Karl Marx, Capital, vol. 3: The Process of Capitalist Production as a Whole, Frederick Engels, ed., Ernest Untermann, trans."

Imagine that you have believed in something for thirty or forty years. Everyone in your community believes exactly the same thing. This thing in which you all believe shapes your personal identity and that of your entire community. Your understanding of existence, of morality and the meaning of life, are inextricably bound up with it. You have passed on your beliefs to your own children. You are aware that those few people who have abandoned their beliefs are treated with revulsion by your community and driven out.

Then, one day, you realise that this thing that has formed the core of your life is absolutely false. What do you do? You might think that you would "take it on the chin" and get on with a new life of truth, but you might well be deluding yourself. Most people are locked into the belief systems with which they were raised and find it impossible to break free, even if they know their beliefs are false.

As I said many times before: In reality this is communism with little bit different fascade. What is different if government owns corporations or corporations owns government?
Election time is comming. Do not forget choose your own corporate puppet and blindly hope for change. It is not gonna happend.
The modern welfare state and the implementation of socialized health care arose in 19th-century Germany, during the reign of Kaiser Wilhelm II and the administration of Chancellor Otto von Bismarck. In the 1870s, the Social Democratic Party had acquired increasing support among the German electorate and threatened to obtain a majority in the Reichstag, the German Parliament. The democratic triumph of Germany's socialist party seemed likely in the near future. The German monarchy and the conservative parties realized that something had to be done to deflect support away from the socialists and back to the established order.

Thus, the Kaiser sponsored welfare-statist legislation that was enacted by the Reichstag. Bismarck had this tactical goal in mind: the masses would shift their support from the radical program of the socialist movement to a renewed allegiance for the monarchy and the political status quo.

But it would be a mistake to interpret the birth of welfare-statism purely as a cynical political pragmatism. It was also argued for on the basis of "the social good" and a higher conception of human liberty than a mere protection of life, liberty and property by the state. The proponents of this view were known as the German Historical School, a leading member of which was Gustav von Schmoller of the University of Berlin. They rejected radical or Marxian socialism and advocated what they called state socialism. William H. Dawson, in his sympathetic exposition, Bismarck and State Socialism (1890), explained the difference:

"Socialism would abolish the existing political order altogether, while State Socialism would use the State for the accomplishment of great economic and social purposes, especially restoring to it the function, which Frederick the Great held to be the principle business of the State, of 'holding the balance' between classes and parties."

Bismarckian state socialism meant to save the established order from revolutionary upheaval and societal disintegration by admitting many of the criticisms that socialists made against a market economy-exploitation of the workers by employers, self-interested behavior that fails to serve the general welfare, poverty of the many in the midst of material riches enjoyed by the few-and by introducing a series of interventionist and welfarist policies that were to improve the economic lot of the masses while saving what was good and worth preserving in the traditional social order.
