The End of GM – Again?
Govt Motors Volt becomes burning green joke ... Obama's green dream goes up in smoke. The highly touted Volt bursts into flames in crash tests, could collapse the power grid if widely used, takes eight years to justify, and uses coal powered electricity. – YouTube
Dominant Social Theme: Green is good and small is better.
Free-Market Analysis: By 2015, the Obama Administration expects to have millions of Volts on the road, or so we are told. But in the meantime, GM is recalling up to 6,000 of them (all the ones it's sold) in order to fix batteries that can catch on fire.
The Chevy Volt is not working out too well. But the power elite behind these green cars will keep pushing them. The powers-that-be are very interested in restricting people's mobility to make them more subject to metropolitan control. Doesn't matter if the vehicles work or not. In fact, the idea is probably that they shouldn't work too well, which is supposed to reinforce the idea that driving is a privilege not a right.
The larger sub-dominant social theme involved in this power elite gambit is obvious. The idea is to bang away at the idea that people need to render themselves impotent (denuded of wealth and power) in order to "save the planet." People are supposed to sacrifice their mobility and their spontaneity. They are literally supposed to be tethered to their houses at night. (You have to plug the Volt in to make it go.)
The Volt is likely nothing that GM honchos would have come up with on their own. But GM is virtually a fiefdom of Fedgov now, and the Obama administration wants green cars on the road, flaws and all. And, surely, the Chevy Volt must increasingly be seen as a flawed product. Here's some more from an article about the fires, which appeared yesterday as a CBS news post:
General Motors will buy Chevrolet Volts back from any owner who is afraid the electric cars will catch fire, the company's CEO said Thursday. In an exclusive interview with The Associated Press, CEO Dan Akerson insisted that the cars are safe, but said the company will purchase the Volts because it wants to keep customers happy. Three fires have broken out in Volts after side-impact crash tests done by the federal government.
Akerson said that if necessary, GM will recall the more than 6,000 Volts now on the road in the U.S. and repair them once the company and federal safety regulators figure out what caused the fires. "If we find that is the solution, we will retrofit every one of them," Akerson said. "We'll make it right."
The move comes on the same day Consumer Reports announced the Volt topped all models in its annual satisfaction survey, which was conducted before the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced its investigation into the crash test fires.

It's really quite simple when you think about it.
GM is basically a government contractor, whose true value to the system will show in WAR time. It's connedsumer orientation is a white-wash. Nothing else can explain the horrendous crap they keep turning out.
GM, Boeing, EADS... . all these albatrosses are war-machines in waiting.

Government Motors... . Hmmmm remember the British Motor Corporation? (BMC)
A "Chairman" Wilson creation.?
Flaming wrecks are the least of their worries... .

Thanks for the thanks, Dave.
Regarding Tesla, there's compelling evidence that he did indeed develop the technology for free energy. He supposedly tapped into the surface electrical flows generated by the Earth's electro-magnetic field. He may have also tested a variation of the device that could be used in reverse, effectively sending a powerful electrical discharge into the atmosphere, that could be aimed to strike anywhere on the planet. Many believe that this was the cause of the "Tunguska Event", which was when, in the remote forests of Siberia in 1908, an explosion, now estimated to be more than 100 times more powerful than the Hiroshima nuclear bomb, leveled almost 1000 square miles of forest, and produced a flash that was seen in the night sky in London. To this day it's one of greatest scientific mysteries of the modern era, as modern studies have ruled out long-prevailing thories of a meteorite or comet. At the time of the event, Tesla was testing his energy device, which was a massive tower that he built at his laboratory outside of New York.
All of this is speculative, because much of his work is classified top secret by the US government to this day. We will probably never know for sure. In Tunguska, no physical evidence has ever been found to explain the explosion.

Chevy awarded the Volt's battery contract to LG Chem which has a higher performance battery than A123's lithium-iron phosphate cell, for example. But some say A123 batteries have a much more stable and safer chemistry. I suspect that GM took a risk with the LG Chem batteries and sacrificed safety for slightly better performance. It's a risk that may backfire for GM and tarnish the reputation of all plug-in hybrid vehicles--even the ones with the safer lithium-iron phosphate chemistry.

"Telsa's ideas didn't. The very idea that there was free energy for everyone, just didn't fit with the power moguals of the day. (And still doesn't)"
What free energy? Teslas brilliance brought many improvements to mankind. But Tesla did not discover any "free" energy.

Excellent post! Thanks Lamb.
I like these coal powered cars. Too bad the infrastructure does not exist to make them practicable.
Each Volt should come with a domestic windmill. Now how much would they cost?

In regards to green energy, I hear people say, "if it were plausiable, the free market would have done it". This is a general statement and you will have to read into that alittle more to get the full point. i.e. What free market?
I believe that this is an old argument. Case in point "Nick" Tesla vs. Tom Edison (Morgan).
Telsa was right. Edison wasn't going to give up his "king of the hill" status, and Morgan was into oil. Morgan being the money behind the R&D of those times. Edison's ideas fit nicely with the Morgan's oil plan.
Telsa's ideas didn't. The very idea that there was free energy for everyone, just didn't fit with the power moguals of the day. (And still doesn't)
Government intervention never works. With the example of Telsa/Edison, you can see that greed and power will do all they can to avert anything that might dethrone them; regardless of the good of the people or environment.
Consider this, the continuum IS the conumdrum.
Thanks for reading my post.

PS: They killed the Electric car again? Definitely they are a piece of the "Rich Power Elite" or RPE for short or mix it up and you get REP! (Think about it) Huh? La8ter

GM does not care if they crash in America. I seen the head of GM in China and he flat out said something similar to that and added that they have 1.7 Billion customers there and less regulatory, EPS, etc etc; So down with the USA and slam were them on the way out then off to be making money here! Basically another ant jumping off this turd if you like analogies.

You know, you can show that centralized control doesn't work to improve the well being of the masses till your blue in the face. Government people and those that can control it just don't seem to hear it. They just don't care. they are benefiting, that's all they care about. That's all that matters.

Electric cars aren't green??? Blasphemy!
Nice job, again, DB. Although I've been critical on some issues, I think you guys are learning fast, and leading the sane media movement.
These vehicles, including electric, corn ethanol, and hydrogen, should be called REVs, for Remote Exhaust Vehicles. When we follow the energy back to the source, each of these types of vehicles are powered by coal, natural gas, oil, and nuclear fission. When you consider the additional energy conversions and associated energy losses, and additional transportation and storage losses, these technologies tend to be less efficient than burning the petroleum fuel directly in the vehicle.
Of the three, electric cars make the least sense, because, as you point out, the primary fuel is coal, the most polluting of all, and the aging electric grid in the US is already nearing its limits (which is not only a practical delivery problem, but an efficiency nightmare as well, since the maxed-out transmission lines are already losing about 30% of all the power generated to resistance losses).
And, we know that the "global warming" and "global climate change" theories are as irrational as the proposed remedies.
However, the very real issue that's been lost in all of this (intentionally, I think), is the insane rate at which humanity is mowing down, poisoning, and consuming the surface of the planet.
But, instead of facing that, all of the "environmentalists" are madly-afraid of harmless cabon dioxide. It's got to be one of the most remarkable PR achievements in human history.
Much of the public likes the whole illusion as much as the elites, as humanity has been waging a sub-surface-grade war against nature for aeons, and the present beliefs provide a cover story for everyone.

GM now = Government Motors = bad ideas subsidized by the American taxpayers.
Of course, the 51%+ of Americans that now get more in government handouts than what they pay in (if anything) don't care and still might want more of the same big government. America is self destructing. "Crony capitalism" doesn't work. When will America wake up? (Don't hold your breath!)
