Last week I asked for more and this week you delivered. Thank you. I will admit that I have some trouble thinking of the USA as an Empire. An empire must have done or left something that stands out to later generations. I can't think of much that the USA has done. Stomping over little countries? Looting? Even their technology is German. Seven thousand NAZI scientists imported after WW2 with the aid of the Vatican. The German Patent offices emptied. Please give me time so that I can do some more thinking.

Reply from the Daily Bell:

Articles say more like 700 scientists than 7,000. However, the shift of knowledge did provide the basis for the infamous Operation Paperclip.

---------------

Operation Paperclip was the code name for the 1945 Office of Strategic Services, Joint Intelligence Objectives Agency[1] recruitment of German scientists from Nazi Germany to the U.S. after VE Day

President Truman authorized Operation Paperclip in August 1945; however he had expressly ordered that anyone found "to have been a member of the Nazi party and more than a nominal participant in its activities, or an active supporter of Nazism militarism" would be excluded.

Under this criterion many of the scientists recruited, such as Wernher von Braun, Arthur Rudolph and Hubertus Strughold, who were all officially on record as Nazis and listed as a "menace to the security of the Allied Forces," were ineligible.

All were cleared to work in the U.S. after having their backgrounds "bleached" by the military. The paperclips that secured newly-minted background details to their personnel files gave the operation its name. (Wikipedia)

I agree with Scott Smith, there are too few Bill Bonners in the world. If there is a chance for the United States, it lies in returning to the American republic of 1787. The ramification will be costly, but failure to do so will be catastrophic.

Reply from the Daily Bell:

It would most certainly be difficult.

An apology for my mistake in the number of German scientists who went to the USA. I meant 700. I thank the Daily Bell for clarifying that in fine style.

Reply from the Daily Bell:

And thanks for the followup.

Having read Empire of Debt a while ago, I have since considered Mr. Bonner and Mr. Wiggens mental giants. Let us elect them to Congress, the Senate or even as President. All joking aside, I think every American should read Mr. Bonners books. They help pull together ones thoughts about what is going on within this country(USA)because of our Governments failings.
I thank you and Mr. Bonner for this interview.

Reply from the Daily Bell:

They would appreciate the kind words.

The way back to a more simple life for the people of the United States, might start with taking the power to make laws away from our government, and putting it in the hands of the people directly, as it is in Switzerland.

Reply from the Daily Bell:

It is better in Switzerland, though Switzerland is a much smaller country. The states would probably have to regain considerably more power, of the sort they had prior to the Civil War.

Bonner is right. Yes, the Empire concept ties many things together; wars for politics and resources (not defense), fake money, excess spending and debt, mercenaries, corrupt govt, decadence at home, etc. Sadly, the USA is a failing empire. We have over 800 bases in 130 countries. See #5 Empire in the left margin of my site.

Thanks for writing. Good luck ...

Insightful article and postscript. Needless, there were other factors contributing to Rome's fall that are also hastening the US slide. Rome's elite showed signs of lead poisoning: the US is infatuated with drugs. Rome lost it's moral compass of polytheism: the US is rejecting the judeo-christian ethic. The death of 1000 cuts. Democracy always ends in tyranny: welcome to the future.

Reply from the Daily Bell:

Thanks. Melancholy thought. Interesting point about lead poisoning, though - but wouldn't that have happened throughout?
