As Predicted, Electric Cars Foundering: GM Shuts Down the Volt

By Anthony Wile

So GM has halted Volt production and laid off 1,500 workers. Government Motors announced on Friday that it has temporarily suspended the production of GM Volts. Here's a report, courtesy of TheHill.com:

General Motors has temporarily suspended production of its Volt electric car, the company announced Friday. GM, which is based in Detroit, announced to employees at one of its facilities that it was halting production of the beleaguered electric car for five weeks and temporarily laying off 1,300 employees.

A GM spokesman told The Hill on Friday that production of the Volt would resume April 23. "We needed to maintain proper inventory and make sure that we continued to meet market demand," GM spokesman Chris Lee said in a telephone interview.

We've just written two fairly critical articles about global warming and electric cars. It's not really a "craze," in fact. In my estimation, it's a power elite manipulation. You can see the articles here:

VIDEO: The Volt – What a Wonderful Car!

VIDEO: Bieber's Fisker Karma and Elite Gift-Giving

Here at the Daily Bell, we cover the elite's dominant social themes, those fear-based memes that attempt to frighten Western middle classes (especially) into giving up power and wealth to globalist solutions such as the United Nations, World Bank, International Monetary Fund, etc.

The necessity for electrical cars, in my view, was one such meme. And these "themes" are not merely hypothetical. You believe in these memes at your own risk; they may not come to fruition in the manner you are led to expect.

Here's a standard justification for what's going on and why GM chose to be an electric car pioneer. This quote comes from an article posted at AOL/autos entitled "The Day the Electric Car Died":

But this is 2012, not 1912. Oil is getting more expensive, harder to get, and dirtier. At the same time, we need to cut global warming pollution from cars by 80 percent or more by 2050 to help avoid the worst consequences of climate change. Given the challenges we face, nearly all major stakeholders, including automakers, government agencies, and energy and climate experts agree that a large-scale market for electric-drive vehicles is essential for reaching long-term global warming and oil reduction goals.

Let's deconstruct it a little bit. Oil is indeed getting more expensive, but I would argue that is because of a combination of increased taxes and tension in the Middle East, plus the usual manipulation of supplies.

As far "climate change" goes, well ... let it go. Hard to keep track of it anyway. And when did the term change from global warming anyway? That's a bit weird, in my view.

It tends to confirm the idea that Western media is controlled by about ten companies – and who knows the disposition of THOSE shares. In other words, a very few people could be controlling the pie.

Global warming is not working out, not making believers of enough of the masses – well, change the name. Rename the promotion and re-start it. That seems to have been what has happened.

But think of the power! A few people in charge of this promotion can rebrand it across the gamut of Western media's platforms, essentially reconfiguring the meme for about one billion people. Wow. That's clout.

But in the era of the Internet Reformation, all of that clout cannot compete against the information that has been unleashed electronically explaining the elite matrix under which humanity continually labors.

Yes, there is Anglosphere power – Jewish and Catholic (Vatican) elites, along with other religious, corporate and military elites. The modern conspiracy gathers its clout via the enormous wealth generated by central banks it controls.

But many of the dominant social themes they have counted on to control populations and move the world toward their goal of global governance have been undermined by the 'Net.

In Afghanistan, the war to conquer the Pashtuns has not gone well, nor have the Pakistan Punjabis been cowed. The whole idea of regulatory democracy for the masses has come under attack, and monopoly central banking as well. The European Union is splitting at the seams.

Global warming, a meme that is most precious to the elites because it paves the way for other control-and-domination facilities, has been almost destroyed in the public by the leaking of emails showing the evidence establishing it was manipulated by scientific and political proponents.

Of course, this doesn't stop the elites from continuing on with their themes and sub themes. Electric cars are just one sub theme of the larger promotional agenda. The idea is to substitute command-and-control transportation for long-range vehicular freedom (oil-and-gas based).

In the brave new world of electrical transportation, the elite's control over your movements is limited only by its collective imagination.

Didn't pay your parking tickets? Suddenly, you'll find you can't "charge up" – even in your own garage. Owe taxes to the civil authorities? You'll find the same thing happening. Trust your travel to the "grid" and suddenly you're not in charge of your own energy supplies.

The so-called "smart meter" movement is part of this as well. The idea is that you can monitor your energy use more effectively via smart meters. But smart meters also make it far easier for the power company to monitor YOU. This – and its high costs and allegedly health-damaging side effects – is probably why so many are rejecting smart meters, another setback for the powers-that-be.

Make no mistake: The halting of Volt production is a setback as well. The idea of electrifying the population with tiny, dangerous, low-range vehicles is again foundering, as it did in the 1970s. This was supposed to be the decade of the electric car. But it's not looking that way. Here's some more from the article:

The Chevy Volt has come under criticism from Republicans in Congress because of reports of its batteries catching on fire during testing. President Obama gave the electric vehicle a vote of confidence in a speech to the United Auto Workers union this week, promising he would buy a Volt "five years from now, when I'm not president anymore."

But Republicans have argued that the Volt was being pushed by the Obama administration for political reasons instead of consumer demand. "Is the commitment to the American public or is the commitment to clean energy, that we are going to get there any way we can?" Rep. Mike Kelly (R-Pa.) asked in a hearing in the House in January about the Volt's reported battery fires. "When the market is ready ... it won't have to be subsidized," Kelly said.

The article also points out that Chevy has tried to tie the Volt to the effort to reduce dependence on foreign oil. "This isn't just the car we wanted to build ...This is the car America had to build."

Actually, America didn't build anything. People built the Volt at the behest of a manipulative power elite that likely sees the electric car craze (which it initiated) as a way to increase control over those pesky masses that keep getting in the way of the pristine world of elite desires. (Desires apparently, according to the Georgia Guidestones) that include removing some six billion of them.)

As we always try to point out, there is likely plenty of oil and gas in the world. The scarcity is not natural but artificial, created to ensure the success of various power elite scarcity memes – one of them being the necessity of "converting society" to electric travel.

Here's a last point: There's nothing wrong with electric cars, so long as the market itself is creating the demand and stimulating the supply. But it's hard to make out even a glimmer of market-based orientation these days between the tax rebates to consumers and government funding to producers of these boondoggles.

What the elites are finding out in this era of free-flowing Internet information is that it is extremely hard over time to control the marketplace – let alone individual products that are not based on legitimate supply-and-demand. Such setbacks, as they occur, have ramifications that go well beyond the Chevy Volt itself.

President Obama tells UAW workers that he will be buying a Chevy Volt when he leaves office in five years and just days later GM suspends production due to slow sales.

At the same time this same "Green" President is otherwise willing to keep Air Force One in the air to watch a basketball game between the NY Knicks and Miami Heat.

Now that seems like a waste of gas to me but then again I am not the King!

In Amsterdam the Netherlands, you get a free parking space with car battery recharger when you purchase an electric car. Prince Maurits (princess Margriet's son) just bought a Fisker Karma and parks it in the most expensive part of the city...

The western media is controlled by one company; Associated Press. AP is owned by Reuters. Rothschilds own controlling interest in AP, AP decides what "news" stories go out and which ones don't! The western media is definitely in the claws of the "elite". By the way, that term elite really bugs me, those people are no different than any of the rest of us. Their s*** stinks too!! And far from being a really smart guy Obama proves every time he speaks, that he has no clue about anything. The "elite" should go back and read their history books, their grand and glorious schemes NEVER go the way they are planned!

Global Cooling - Global Warming - Anthropomorphic Global Warming - Climate Change - Catastrophic Climate change.

They will beat it into you one way or another.

A good article, Mr. Wile. Perhaps Obama was revealing that he is cheap with his own money, knowing the car will be discontinued and he can buy it used from a junkyard in five years. If he was as parsimonious with taxpayer money, the country would be in better shape. But then his cronies in these scams would have less money to donate to the campaign machine. I am not sure whether this qualifies as corruption or not. But I give Obama credit for being able to lull half the nation into zombie-like obedience and slumber.

Seems the agenda has been set. Leaving us to debate bogus global warming or climate change arguments creates a distraction and buys more time and space to steamroller an agenda and shove it down our throats. Seems like a pattern here, the shoving it down our throats (Bush II with Iraq; Obama with Obamacare, Libya, Syria). A bit piecemeal, but it is an impressive series of conquests.

Perhaps it is smart, getting us to debate global climate change and forget about all their wars. It seems like the NATO slaughter in Libya has disappeared from public consciousness; like it never happened. Perhaps to be repeated in Syria, and Iran; which will leave the much tougher neo-con dream target, Russia. The world is their oyster to be plucked.

"Let's deconstruct it a little bit. Oil is indeed getting more expensive"
Indeed it is. A local Chevron station is charging $ 5.49 for a gallon of diesel.
One gets the feeling that there is so much oil that it has to be restricted,,, or put aside.

If you look at old maps, you find that huge areas of Alaska were designated as the
Naval Number 7 petroleum reserve and the Naval Number 4 petroleum reserve.
The Prudhoe Bay area is a very small area by Alaska standards. I believe that they were only allowed to explore a 100 sq. mile area. At the edge of that area was Gull island.
It has often been reported to contain enormous amounts of oil.

If you look at the size of the #4 and #7 reserves, and the tiny size of the Prudhoe field, you get the idea that there is a lot of oil.
There is also something funny going on.
"require the Secretary of Energy to sell the naval petroleum reserves since such reserves are no longer necessary for the national security of the United States. "

The Alaskan oil is not only artesian, it is hot. It also contains sand. The pipe is wearing away and will need to be replaced. Not sure that it will ever happen.

It's possible that the PTB need to choke off Iranian oil to keep the price elevated. There is a LOT of new oil coming on-line in Brazil and Namibia.

Anthony, no matter what anybody thinks is true or not, Hebrew is the "only" inspired language of our Creator and such a set-apart spirit reveals that, as England, America also is the REAL "ISRAEL" by the seed of Joseph, not Judah, only promised Grace(Messiah), but not Race as Joseph(Gen. 48:16). Well. Our brother England already as achieved this promised covenant to be the greatest civil empire in world history, America, England's brother, had nothing left to do but have it's women alone(remember the story of Eve(Hawah in Hebrew) to start man's age? Wel, now it's time to end it, so she has placed the "forbidden foreigner" of Deuteronomy 17:15 over u.s. and if that was not bad enough, also the self-confirmed Anti-Christ(Marxist) over us in Revelation 11. Next, most likely this coming year in September 16, 2012, the two-witnesses of Revelation, chapter 11 will come against us and destroy save 144,000 of the 12 tribes of Israel, less Dan(Irish) and also 144,000 spiritual members of his Assembly. It also is written that more gentiles will be kept alive during the witnessing of these two-witnesses, but that is not specified in number! Watch, because Yahweh does nothing without first telling those that he has called out of Babylon!

The United States and Israel threaten Iran, which sends oil prices higher due to speculation, which makes more money for the oil companies who don't have to drill harder, while the government makes more money in taxes from us peasants. This is a great racket. Up up and away!

How about mentioning that electric cars require power plants? Powered by nuclear, coal, oil, or natural gas? . . . and that the trasnsmission losses from power plants ARE ENORMOUS! We need oil, but the Rockefeller / OPEC / Islamic / Obama camarilla wants to keep it on the scarce side to keep the price up. Green energy DREAMS are JUST AN EXCUSES for not allowing maximum exploration and development of real energy resources at the behest of existing Oligopolists.

Posted by marty on 03/05/12 03:14 AM

Two more reasons that the price of oil is rising are that there is enormous monetary inflation by the Fed, the ECB, and other evil central banks(redundant), and reserves of conventional oil(cheaply produced, or if you prefer high EROI)are depleting.

While you are certainly correct, that "smart meters"(metres in Europe) will enable the electrical utility to conveniently monitor customer's instantaneous power usage, and if the hardware is so configured, to turn it off, an easily installed, and common device called an inductive pickup already allows the real(as opposed to imaginary, it's a technical term) current to be measured, revealing the instantaneous power usage.

Shutting off a customers electricity as punishment for what ever reason has never been a problem, as people who don't pay their bills find out. The real reason that utilities desire, and Austrian school economists should approve of smart meters,is that it allows instantaneous pricing of said power, based on the cost of generation. Smith's ubiquitous invisible hand will then cause users to shift usage to low demand periods, reducing peak demand, which is every electrical utilities wish.

As I'm sure many readers realize, the true cost to the utility of providing electricity varies greatly, as demand rises, and falls. During periods of extremely low demand, you actually do the utility a favor in using electricity, else the utility will have to shut down base load generation, or the grid will fail. Imagine the grid is a water pipe. If too much water is pumped in, and not enough is used, pressure rises and the pipe may burst. There is an analogous situation with the electrical grid. Since base load generating capacity is difficult to shut down, and restart(read expensive), it is to be avoided.

I believe the Volt(series hybrid), and other electric cars, are selling slowly because they are relatively expensive, when compared to vehicles of similar size that are powered solely by internal combustion. The vast majority of the public does not understand how much more reliable, and cheaper to use on a per mile basis, over the life of the vehicle, a properly designed, and built electrical car is, or at least will be. Lower fuel costs are often mentioned, but what should be extraordinarily lower maintenance costs, and extraordinarily longer lifespan of the vehicle are not. The scrap value of the vehicle, will be much higher, because the components are more likely to be useable(not worn out), and the elements used in their construction like neodymium and lithium are expensive.

I now drive a '92 Honda Civic VX, which returns 45 MPG(19 Km per liter for my European friends. As a sane engineer, I myself prefer the Metric system, despite my US nationality). I bought it new in 1992, for it's practicality, and it's ground breaking engineering. It now has 238K miles on the odometer, I have never replaced anything, not a wear component, other than a distributor, that I replaced myself.

Indeed, a tribute to the Honda Corporation's obsession with quality, the men and women who worked at the Toronto factory where it was assembled, and my own masterful maintenance. When I purchased it for cash, 20 years ago, in Salisbury, NC, I remember hoping, that it would last until I could replace it with an electric vehicle.

At the time, I believed that it would, knowing that Honda built fine machinery, but this workhorse of a car has far exceeded my expectations. I now hope, and believe, that it will last until I can purchase a car with an autopilot. Note that I no longer consider replacing, it. It has become my good, and faithful servant, my strong right arm. I could no longer sell it, anymore than I could sell a beloved horse to the knacker. It will be put out to pasture(I own a farm), when it can no longer carry me, assuming I don't die first.

There is a mechanism that is driving the rapid development of the shale gas, and oil industry, that is not generally recognized. Many small companies have bought concessions to develop reserves in "plays", and are developing them, not because they are making a profit on selling the oil and gas they get from the wells, but because once the wells are producing, and the field is "proved out" it can be sold, or the company it's self can be sold.

This drives the drilling of wells that may not be economic, thus the extraordinary drop in the cost of natural gas in the US. Since gas is much less fungible than oil, don't expect the same to happen to oil. As I write, oil pipelines that once delivered to Cushing, OK (delivery point for WTI contracts) are being converted to pipelines that deliver from Cushing. Another complicating factor in comparing shale to conventional production of gas, and oil, is that in general, the wells deplete more quickly, and must be refracked, which is an expensive process, that produces poorer results upon each new iteration.

This is a very well reasoned feedback. And were the world not under attack from an evident and obvious power elite that attempts to dominate free markets and turn them to it own advantage via mercantilism, we would agree with you.

Posted by marty on 03/05/12 01:25 PM

In reply to the editor.

I think, that beyond a shadow of a doubt, that you are correct about the control from the top, exerted by the power elite. However, I believe the electric car meme is not about gaining social control through a new mode of transportation. I believe that it, and it's neocon(evil) mirror twin, the "drill baby drill" meme which has unfortunately infected many Tea Party members(easily misguided), and Libertarians(good),is an attempt to convince, in particular, the American public that they can continue to work twenty miles from their homes, shop ten miles from their homes in a different direction, and take their children to a school 5 miles away, in still a different direction, indefinitely. This organization of society benefits greatly the large corporations, who thrive from the economies of scale allowed by it. Not to mention by selling the vehicles, building and maintaining the transportation infrastructure, and selling the fuel. These corporations, of course, make it harder to live "off the books", as well as funnel money to stockholders, corporate officers, and board members all over the world. As long as there is some hope on the horizon that this level of personal transportation can me maintained, municipalities will continue foolish, zoning policies that strictly segregate neighborhoods, based on function.
When I was a child, I lived in a upper middle class neighborhood in a large town in the metropolitan region of Charlotte, NC(home of the evil BOA, and the recently absorbed by also evil Wells Fargo, Wachovia). Forty years ago, there were 2 supermarkets, both locally owned, within 1 mile of our home. Dairy, produce, meat, health&beauty supplies, and home cleaning supplies under one roof. My school was 1.5 blocks away, and within a mile, there were several large mills serving various sectors of the textile industry. In them one could find well paying jobs as a machine tender, fixer(mechanic), engineer, accountant, or manager. I still remember the sign, where they advertised the positions available. In particular the fixer sign never left it's hooks, since this was a extremely skilled profession, and I mean profession, which was always difficult to fill. My parent's owned a very large house, built by a mill owner, and rented out two apartments, made from wings of the house, that had bricked up doors to the core that we lived in. My father traveled extensively around western NC on business, often overnight, and my mother worked(unusual), as a school teacher, seven miles away, so we actually needed 2 cars. In part, since there was no daycare in existence, and we had no extended family living with us, we had a black maid. She was a saintly woman, who referred to me as her sweet white baby, and was a important part of my life, during my formative years. I credit her with the way I deal comfortably, and naturally with black folk, unlike many of my paler brethren, and that I don't care what ethnicity people happen to be. She was paid cash, and I would be amazed if I found that payroll taxes or income taxes were withheld. In other words she was off the books.
If I were transported back into time, I could quite easily earn a fine living, as a fixer, I'd think, and could easily maintain a household, without car. Today, unless one lives in a hyper urban environment like NYC, this is impossible. With the exception of the school, owned by the local municipal corporation, all these well operating institutions were locally owned. Some of the mills may have had a corporate structure, but if they did, they were not publicly traded on any exchange. The profits stayed mostly local, as in the case of the supermarkets. In short, they were not good grazing for the power elite.
In closing, there is a real possibility that I may in the future generate my own electricity, as I now grow, and process the fuel with which I heat my home, and in the winter heat my domestic hot water(modified wood furnace). There is exactly zero chance that I will ever refine my own crude oil into gasoline, or fuel oil. I truly believe that smart meter adoption is driven by the utilities need to level loads. It is a tool, and like any tool, it will be misused by the evil among us. The electric car will also level loads, as most charging will be done at night, and there are many schemes to use electric cars as peaking generation, and storage.

PS I really enjoy reading, and commenting on your blog. I thank you for this intellectual outlet.

This seems to be a meme that is going around again. In a documentary film Gm made a feet of EV-1 electric vehicles that were so efficient, they were on the brink of alerting the future of driving in America, and those lucky enough to drive one gave it glowing reviews. However, within a short time span they were all recalled and shredded. The ones who were the drivers of these vehicles followed the demise of this car on film. Definitely worth watching as to how the big coproations and the oil industry interferred.

Posted by mariejane on 03/05/12 05:49 PM

The name of the documentary mentioned below is "Who Killed the Electric Care? A Lack of Consumer Confidence.. or Conspiracy?

Posted by marty on 03/05/12 07:28 PM

I've read about the EV-1. To test them under real world conditions, GM leased them, but decided to scrap, rather than sell them to the lease owners at any price. GM acted like a government agency, even before it was one. The aerodynamics were ground breaking, and the mechanicals were good, but the deep discharge lead acid batteries sucked(too heavy), so you wouldn't want to try to climb any steep hills, at highway speeds. They were leased to volunteers, who knew what they were getting, and were almost universally pleased with the cars. My guess, is that once the engineers told upper level management how long they would last(they were almost certainly too technically illiterate to sort it out for themselves, stupid MBAs), and how low the cost per mile over the life of the vehicle would be, management got scared(see my earlier post). Remember, if it had not been for the Japanese, and the Folkswagon(Volkswagen) GM, Ford, and Chrysler customers would still be experiencing the planned obsolescence, that Microsoft Windows users still deal with. Quality did not become job one, until bankruptcy was the only other option.
