Media Control Grows More Difficult … And Obvious
By Anthony Wile - March 29, 2014

We have noticed a trend toward boldness – even brazenness – when it comes to manipulating the media in the US. It's as if politicians especially are not even bothering to hide their intentions.

We recently ran an article entitled, "Congress Mulls Licensing Speech?" that reported on this trend.

The subject of the article was the shield law that Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York was trying to push through the US Senate. Schumer was portraying the bill as something that was needed to protect "journalists" from US Intel agencies that are increasingly asking courts to place reporters in jail for not revealing their sources upon request.

Of course, what would have been more reasonable – were Schumer ever apt to be reasonable – would be to pass a law forbidding Intel agencies from trying to put reporters in jail.

This doesn't seem to have occurred to Schumer, however. Or more likely, it occurred to him but he discarded the idea. Instead, he wants the government to protect "journalists" – at least the ones that he wishes to formally designate – by passing a law defining what "rights" they have.

To get across the idea of what Schumer was really after, we used the word "licensing." We wrote:

If it weren't tough enough to distinguish fact from propaganda, the US government is surely getting ready to hand out licenses to "approved" reporting facilities … sooner or later anyway. Of course, that's not how it's being reported by these same facilities. They're explaining that it is a "bill" that will address "gathering information."

We went looking for mainstream media commentary that defined Schumer's bill as licensing but at the time we couldn't find anything. However, more recently, an article posted at Breitbart.com DID define it that way. Surprisingly, it was a politician that provided the term: the number two Republican in the Senate, John Cornyn, (R-TX).

"They want to pick and choose which journalists are covered," the Texan Republican told News. "In other words, if you're a blogger they might not cover you, but if you work for the New York Times they might. Given the changes in the way we get information and the way we consume news, that really smacks to me in essence of government licensing who's an official 'journalist' for the purposes of a shield law and who's not. If there is one thing I can glean from the First Amendment, it is that government should not be in the business of licensing the news media."

Cornyn also told Breitbart that Schumer probably didn't have the votes to pass the bill, even though he claimed to, and that Cornyn and others were going to fight hard against it. ""It's totally inconsistent with the notion of a free press and the First Amendment," Cornyn said.

While Schumer seems to have an increasingly difficult legislative task on his hands, another media-oriented Democratic initiative has just gotten underway. The Weekly Standard reports that "Valerie Jarrett [goes] to Hollywood to Get Obamacare in Movie, TV Scripts."

Jarrett is one of President Barack Obama's most important advisors and thus, her trip to Hollywood must be seen as a measure of just how significant the administration believes media placements are to the fortunes of the new health care legislation.

What is interesting about Jarrett's Hollywood focus is that rather than attempting to downplay it, Jarrett has been making her effort into a media campaign itself.

Here's how the Weekly Standard reported on it:

A top advisor to President Barack Obama is in Los Angeles to try to get Obamacare written into scripts of TV shows and movies. Valerie Jarrett explained in an appearance on Top That! on PopSugar.com.

"That's the cool thing," a host said to the presidential advisor. "You've been reaching out to people that are, you know, outside of the norm of what the president might work with. Who else are you working with? Like celebrities, personalities, things like that?"

"You name it," said Jarrett. "That's part of why I'm in L.A. I'm meeting with writers of various TV shows and movies to try to get it into the scripts."

When Jarrett says "it into the scripts," she's referring to getting references to Obamacare, the president's signature legislation, into the scripts of TV shows and movies.

She continued: "We're talking to celebrities. We're talking to athletes, because obviously they get injured a lot and many of them are the same age as the market we're going after.

And what they can say is, 'Look, you never know when life is going to throw you a curve ball. You're walking down the street, you're a little clumsy, you trip, you fall – where do you end up? Emergency room. A couple grand just to walk in the door." "Right," said the host. "Who can afford that?" asked Jarrett. "Nobody," said a host.

Is what Jarrett doing really "cool," as she describes it? Bluntly, she's using public funds to influence private corporations to promote a specific and controversial legislative agenda that has just federalized one-sixth of the economy.

While this is done regularly by a variety of federal agencies, none of the officials of these agencies have ever embarked on a media tour to publicize of it. This is why I used the word "brazen" at the beginning of this article.

In the 20th century, it was fairly easy to conceal media manipulation. But not so in the 21st. From marijuana to what we call the "Wall Street Party," we can see very clearly how memes are constructed and disseminated. In fact, we know nearly as much about them as their producers.

People like Schumer and Jarrett have decided to make a virtue of their unwanted transparency – probably because they cannot do anything else. But advertising the mechanism behind these promotions doesn't make them any more attractive.

Times have changed.

Looking forward to your discussion of the Obama Administration’s proposed actions regarding passing control of the internet to an “international body”. Or did I miss it?

The Medium Is The Message; Marshall McLuhan, 1979

“The medium is the message” is a phrase coined by Marshall McLuhan meaning that the form of a medium embeds itself in the message, creating a symbiotic relationship by which the medium influences how the message is perceived. Wikipedia

Thank you …. We must not lose focus on these tricksters of the ILK of Schumer and Jarett …. Their intention to deceive and manipulate is never ending… wise up america..

Philip. Anthony that’s a 5 star message, thank you.

There is no censorship of the mainstream media in the US – because it isn’t necessary. The corporate mainstream media censors itself quite willingly. More than that: as the Snowden affair has shown, the “mainstream” media is even more fanatical than US government about shutting down dissent and squashing all critical inquiry.

Any proposed legislation seeping through the legislative sewer system is NOT targeting the mainstream media (which is controlled by 6 media giants: GE, Disney, Viacom, News Corp, Time Warner, and CBS) –because there is no need to target or censor an entity that is already fully cooperating in partnership with the US government and part of the existing power structure that willingly self censors itself. Make no mistake – any legislative excrement coming out of Washington is specifically targeting those “rouge alternatives” that reside outside the power structure – which the government (as of today) has little control over.

It should be mentioned that the mainstream media companies are members of the family of powerful institutions, and their primary role, the responsibility that trumps all others, is to protect their own –NOT challenge them, expose them, or bring them down. The old media is a branch of the establishment power structure, so their chief concern is perpetuating and growing the institution by any means necessary — NOT with speaking truth to power or holding government accountable.

    Hi DB,

    Thanx for this piece.

On the theme of undermining the US $$….

”Germany’s Bundesbank and the People’s Bank of China agreed to cooperate in the clearing and settling of payments in renminbi, paving the way for Frankfurt to corner a share of the offshore market.

The central banks signed a memorandum of understanding in Berlin today, when Chinese President Xi Jinping met German
Chancellor Angela Merkel, the Frankfurt-based Bundesbank said in an e-mailed statement.”

Germany’s financial capital prevailed over Paris and Luxembourg in a euro-area race to win trade in renminbi, which
overtook the euro to become the second-most used currency in global trade finance in October, according to the Society for
    Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication.

“Frankfurt is one of Europe’s foremost financial centers and home to two central banks, making it a particularly suitable
    location,”
    http://www.businessweek.com/news/2014-03-27/frankfurt-sets-sights-on-yuan-offshore-trade-as-xi-visits-merkel

The only thing thats giving the dollar value, usage and petrol currency are very much getting undermined more and more…. As the piece states the volumes of currency between China and Germany not settled in US $ is quite a blow to the price of the $.

We have compliant media, they will not report the news, they are suppose cast the news
and not spin the lies forwarded by their paymasters.

I wonder what happened to stalwarts of investigative journalists who used to expose
corruption and seeking justice for their citizens. It completely makes me loose my beliefs in
virtues of democracy. Will, we ever see expose, like Watergate.

    • ” I wonder what happened to stalwarts of investigative journalists..”

We the citizen don’t bid high enough for the deliverance of truth, yet apparently we the citizen do bid high enough for the consumption of a compromised product. Yes the ‘virtues’ of democracy. Sweet ain’t it? And this is not my admonition of mankind. It is my admonition of the smashingly popular economy of collective group think. Personally, for me it is worth considering the price paid for allowing others to know me better than I know myself.

      • saintgeorge5

Well said. I always wonder. Why populace can be herded, into a pan and believe
without questioning the veracity of lies spewed to us.

  • RED

If you have not already done so, you should conduct a “critical” in depth chronological review of the history of Valerie Jarrett. It will be highly “instructive”. (I apologize if you have already performed this task, and I missed it).

  • Kuuleimomi

“Bluntly, she’s using public funds to influence private corporations to promote a specific and controversial legislative agenda that has just federalized one-sixth of the economy.”

True, It may not be cool and brazen, but the agenda says they can do it if what has been said that the United States of America is a corporation, then “they” are “ok” to do so. The question that should be asked is about the funds being used. Is it really public funds or private funds, anymore? Is the country operating on public funds or private? Private is that which lives outside the public (government) operation of law. We all know this to be true. The real battle field has always been about money, top of the line to the bottom. Money rules.

By all indicators bouncing back and forth, the American government has been privatized a long time ago. It is a fallacy to imagine America has a government once called, United States or United States of America anymore. Money talks and if you have lots of it whether public or private that is what moves any agenda along.

There is more that can be said for sure. Be certain no one wants to go down unless there is a fighting chance you can win, especially on a zero budget. I’m one of them. My zero budget rule is compliance is mandatory while participation is not. Here I am free to believe or not believe and participate wisely. What is good for some will never be for others. Balance is the footing on uneven ground. Surfing the waves is our foundation for this understanding you can use anything to bring about balance.

Mahalo for keeping the lights burning on any subject matter.

    • Private funds, Public funds, winning or losing depends on what You, I or We are buying, yes? Do we not choose to perform a balancing act? Nothing against your post, it just had a stable foundation for a sounding board. 🙂

Yes, America is Still in an Official State of Emergency Global Research, February 11, 2010

A reader asked whether the U.S. is still in an official state of emergency, and if so, what that means.

The answer is yes, we are still in a state of emergency.

Specifically: On September 11, 2001, the government declared a state of emergency. That declared state of emergency was formally put in writing on 9/14/2001: “A national emergency exists by reason of the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center, New York, New York, and the Pentagon, and the continuing and immediate threat of further attacks on the United States.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, I hereby declare that the national emergency has existed since September 11, 2001 . . . .” That declared state of emergency has continued in full force and effect from 9/11 [throughout the Bush administration] to the present.

On September 10 2009, President Obama continued the state of emergency: The terrorist threat that led to the declaration on September 14, 2001, of a national emergency continues. For this reason, I have determined that it is necessary to continue in effect after September 14, 2009, the national emergency with respect to the terrorist threat.

Talking about press… somehow miss LeGarde from the IMF choose to be open but the press choose not to show it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVsGzIYmquc#t=375 Iam puzzled a bit both why this was not shown just as what she really wants to say….This interview sounds to me she wants to sound like she (the IMF) is in control but really is not…..

Notice how she uses the rebalancing (reset) of the global economy words as the ECB did before it gotten into the debt crisis and since dropped it from their press releases.

I really suggest listening to this interview. THe analisis in the video is not that good but the words of miss LaGarde more then make up for it. She sure sounds like telling what the plan is.

  • A little something for the future, and being brought to you by ………… well, that is the ¥gazillion question which smarter intelligence servers will ensure and insure and assure providers need not be known to any without a legitimate and/or sympathetic and empathetic need to know and/or without the already well established and necessary wherewithall to exercise the greater knowledge provided to the greater mutual advantage of all who know of what needs to be known for a better future, completely different from a wasted past. And do yourself a favour and don’t overly complicate matters. All that you need to know, at least for now, is contained in the following few bold words.

Newly Farmed and Phormed and Phished Words Command and Control and Create New Orderly CyberIntelAIgent Worlds with the Noble Execution of Novel Ideas in NEUKlearer HyperRadioProActive IT Applications within Sublime IntelAIgent Networks and/or Systems InterNetworking Stealthily ……. Relatively Anonymously, Practically Invisibly and Virtually Autonomously.

Such sorts of rapid game changing developments though, are certainly recognised in defence and security theatres as being a field of concern in which they are seriously and dangerously deficient and would have need of more specialised input to try to influence the future direction with IT and Media flows, with this being a prime defensive move, but hardly unique example, ….. http://rt.com/usa/pentagon-triple-cyber-security-089/ However, players in such environments as can effect radical and global change, are both surreally and severely hampered and beautifully protected by the simplest of maxims …… Garbage In Garbage Out ….. which guarantees fine progress to quality input which is embraced and can be freely shared and not fought over for exclusivity which would render and introduce an advantaging leverage to parties intellectually ill-equipped and totally unsuited to wield its powerful commanding controls.

And here be something which you will probably never know be resting in an email inbox, with a reply pending lest it be answered heroically by others elsewhere engaged in similar fields and thus be one obliged to follow rather than lead in Live Operational Virtual Environments ……

“Traditional cyber defense is like a football team running the same defensive play over and over – regardless of what the offense is doing,” said Dr. Rohan Amin, director for Lockheed Martin Global Cyber and Security Solutions. “Intelligence-driven cyber security works like a defensive squad that scouts their opponents, knows their playbook and can make midgame adjustments.” …… http://lockheedmartin.com/us/news/features/2013/coding-out-crime.html …… October 15, 2013

The Great Game and Greater IntelAIgent Games Plays have moved on and advanced with quantum leaps into CyberIntelAIgent Security and Virtual Protection, Dr Rohan Amin, and virtual defence systems are practically useless, and in all fact, would harbour and server an abiding in-house vulnerability for APT stealthy trojan horse exploitation, unless able to handle midgame playbook mined and mind game adjustments, with the latter ability and capability by far the more important command and control facility for any and all Reality Stealth Missions in Live Operational Virtual Environments …… which can easily be anonymously and autonomously delivered/packaged/streamed in any number of Sublime InterNetworking Media Presenting and/or Media Presented Realities*. And the absence of vice in SIN Media Portfolios/Advanced Intellectual Property ProVision, does auger well for a completely different and even better beta future unfurling/presentation without unnecessary and unwelcome inclusions of sub-prime product from the past.

    * Although there is a significant difference in the essence of both of those readily available methodologies, [with Reality creating Media Presentations in the one, and Media creating Reality Presentations in the other] is the resultant output product with input material exactly the same whenever required and desired, for of course, there is always the lurking presence and availability in humans of wayward choice to deliver conflicts rather than harmonies, although to venture down those avenues has one then immediately indelibly marked and tagged as a target of interest for close machine led supervision and/or immediate removal from the game/scene.

Do Lockheed Martin have those exposed bases covered? Or is it something they have yet to purchase and/or develop for CyberSpace Command and Controlling Systems?

The criminal class in Hollyweird is almost as evil as the parasites in DC, maybe worse because they promote this wickedness to our whole nation via “entertainment”

  • FEEuser

This has to be good news for libertarians. If human culture and its many arts, offshoots, and subdivisions are spontaneous orders, then so are news reports, and so is the Internet which now brings us those news reports. Therefore, any attempt to commandeer this process via political artifice is bound to break down sooner or later because of daily progress, constant and unpredictable change, and the infinite complexity of human culture and events.

As we have come to know, in a fascist state, a free and independent news media is anathema. State-sponsored news is getting scooped and bypassed every day by the alternative press. It’s a massacre, really. People are just tuning out, walking away.

It’s very clear that the elites are struggling very nervously with this. The fact is that we the people and the elites are in an information war, and the elites are LOSING it, as Hillary Clinton clearly expressed in her speech in Congress a while back.

For now, their whining and complaining involves “legislation,” sthough surely everything must be on the table behind closed doors, even the wild and the crazy. Like the Mafia, their excuse is “protection” for journalists. Obviously, such proposals count on plentiful numbers of the uninformed and the gullible. That technique was fine once upon a time, but no more. For the first time in history, the numbers of the ignorant are actually dropping with every passing hour. This is an incredible development which must leave the elites in alternate states of wonder and rage.

There is nothing that the power elite can do to arrest this process because it involves spontaneous order, i.e., continuous transformation of human culture. Such phenomena have nothing whatever to do with government and its “legislation,” indeed, are COMPLETELY independent of it.

Even the entertainment industry cannot control this mysterious process. The public is on to their game and know that their films are staged events for the elites, psy-ops, and hoaxes.

  • Robert Eastman

The recent news that Obama has said, “the U.S.A. will be giving away the ‘oversight/control of the Internet’ to an international-panel,” started me contemplating the “WHY?” factor. After much consideration, the obvious struck me like a bolt of lightning! Once “control of the Internet” has been given away… Censorship will become easier to implement unfettered! No longer will ‘angry Americans’ be able to harass their congressmen with loss-of-job threats. Because it will be out of their control they will have a ‘plausible ready-made excuse’ that will steal even more of our Liberty, the right to access / research / share Truth-Logic!
Because I know so little about how the Internet actually works, will ‘The Daily Bell’ please consider researching / reporting on the possibility of this happening?

  • Predestined

Just like Pravda in Soviet days. Schumer should change his name to Brezhnev. Schubert and his ilk are like human vermin trying to tell people what they can or cannot say, what they can or cannot hear. They try to hide the truth from people. They are the filthiest of people.

  • This kind of thing, the iron fist beginning to remove the velvet glove, coming out of the ‘benevolent dictator’ closet and revealing itself simply as a dictator, is inevitable when you ponder simple facts of human nature for a while.

There has never been any absolute ruler who wanted his rule to be secret. Power wants not only to be obeyed but it wants its pride to be pandered to, it wants acknowledgement of its power, it wants adulation and very public acclamation.

    The more, the better.

Knowing the sentiments of people generally tend to wanting power over others but not wanting others to have power over us, our rulers conceal their true designs until they are confident that open acknowledgement of their absolute power can no longer harm them. That their power is secure from our displeasure.

This is what the flying death robot armies are all about; soldiers who will kill on command, without demur, without pity, without dissent, without rebellion.

The open proclamations of absolute centralised power are, to any thinking person, an alarming sign of the growing confidence of our rulers that they cannot now be challenged or deposed, as previous rulers have been, by the ‘ordinary’ people.

On the other hand, Louis Quatorze thought he was secure, too.

What we must ask of ourselves is, how warranted is the new confidence of our new emperors?
