How Good Food and Strong Social Ties Will Save Society
By Joe Jarvis - August 03, 2017

Good food plus interesting people is a recipe for happiness.

As humans evolved, we lived in tight knit self-sufficient communities. Nomadic hunter gatherers spent their time foraging, hunting, eating, and playing together.

It’s tempting to romanticize those days, but they came with some pretty harsh realities. As stressful and lonely as the modern world can be, countless technological benefits have made our lives longer and healthier.

Yet automation and technology have become an end in themselves, rather than a means to live a better life. It is at this juncture that society would do well to examine where we came from, and where we are.

There is no reason we can’t meld the philosophies of our ancestors and our modern world. We can keep the prosperity and reconnect with our roots.

Bad food and social isolation are actually quite related to the industrial age. One of the saddest images I can conjure is someone eating a microwave dinner in front of the tv alone.

Humans evolved mostly foraging and hunting as groups. Strong social ties were inextricable from reaping the most necessary resources.

Forager’s Diet

We don’t need to go back to loin cloths and straw huts to enjoy what our ancestors enjoyed.

But we could take a few pages out of their book.

Sapiens, written by Yuval Noah Herari, is about the origins of the human species, and its evolution up to the present.

When our ancestors were living in nomadic tribes, the childhood mortality rate was high. This brought down the average life span to somewhere in the 30’s. But not many 30-year-olds were dropping dead. It was obviously much harder to deal with traumatic injuries, but overall, people were not much less healthy than humans today.

The foragers’ secret of success, which protected them from starvation and malnutrition, was their varied diet. Farmers tend to eat a very limited and unbalanced diet. Especially in premodern times, most of the calories feeding an agricultural population came from a single crop – such as wheat, potatoes or rice – that lacks some of the vitamins, minerals and other nutritional materials humans need. The typical peasant in traditional China ate rice for breakfast, rice for lunch, and rice for dinner. If she were lucky, she could expect to eat the same on the following day. By contrast, ancient foragers regularly ate dozens of different foodstuffs. The peasant’s ancient ancestor, the forager, may have eaten berries and mushrooms for breakfast; fruits, snails and turtle for lunch; and rabbit steak with wild onions for dinner. Tomorrows menu might have been completely different. This variety ensured that the ancient foragers received all the necessary nutrients.

This is in stark contrast to the modern food pyramid that for years recommended more grains than any other food group. Despite the availability of diverse food in a global market with robust shipping networks, most people today still have a terribly bland diet.

And all this is before we even start talking about the chemicals pumped into modern processed foods as preservatives, pesticides, flavorings, and dyes.

Eating properly would help people avoid most major illnesses and physical health issues.

And an actual supportive fulfilling community of strong social ties would help avoid the psychological health detriments of the modern era.

Tribal Community

Social lives of ancient humans varied greatly depending on the tribe in which they were a part.

Ever since the Cognitive Revolution, there hasn’t been a single natural way of life for Sapiens. There are only cultural choices, from among a bewildering palette of possibilities.

This is a lesson in itself. Today there is a mass market for culture. Consumers are sold an image to emulate, and accessories to compliment it. There are a few to choose from, but they are basically all a part of the government-corporate-media conglomerate. Even rebelling against the status quo is typically done in a prescribed way, with plenty of products to help.

Harari points out in Sapiens that this is largely by design. We have been lured away from the ties of community, family, and other small scale organic institutions.

In their place, we are sold membership to consumer groups. We feel like we are apart of something, but our only real connection to others in the group is the similar products we buy–or make and sell.

Culture is much more unique than that. Using the internet, I have found communities that I would never have known existed if I was searching in the 1980’s. I found a group of people interested in Startup Societies, which is exactly what I am talking about. People can now break off into micro-societies of their own formation. They can live alongside people with a strong sense of inclusion, without withdrawing from the rest of the world.

I expect this trend will only grow as people feel that corporate and government institutions have failed them.

And I suspect it will make people quite happy. People will rediscover what it means to be a part of a group of their own choosing, not a forced commonality designed by government elites and corporate profiteers.

Modern Interpretation

Just to reiterate, I do not advocate abandoning all the comforts of modern life and moving back into the woods, though at times I am tempted to do so.

I am simply making the case that the pendulum has swung a bit too far on the industrial factory food and mechanized consumer community scale. We can bring it back to center by exploring new ways to organize micro-societies.

For people who were social outcasts in ancient tribal groups, life must have been hell. But today, we can find communities to join, virtual or psychical, all around the world. It is not the luck of the draw, it is a matter of finding where you fit.

And the same goes for healthy, diverse food options. They are available, it is just a matter of proper budgeting, and caring enough to find them.

What I imagine personally is emulating a tribal group, while retaining modern comforts and technology.

I hope to someday live on a technologically advanced organic farm, complete with a food forest, and aquaponics. I want other friends and family of mine to join me, all live on the same large property, and enjoy not just our free time, but our working hours together.

It may sound utopian, but I am not talking about a hippie-commune. I am talking about melding the benefits of ancient community and diet, with the advancements of modern technology and information.

The evidence suggests, and my gut feeling tells me, that this will make me happy and healthy.

Already I live on a smaller version of that. But the mini-farm is not a commune. None of this to each according to his need, from each according to his ability, crap. It is a trade. I work in exchange for room and board.

But it doesn’t have to be farming based either. I could imagine countless possibilities for small scale societies which come together based on different shared interests, goals, and values.

What would your ideal modern community be?

It is foolishness to base anything on evolution

    • Howdy DonRL,

In worlds that are easily led by the fooled and fools is the base for anything easily conjured up to appear as if from the distant human past and evolutionary rather realised as being from an alien future and revolutionary. Such as both an unknown and known unknown reality is surely too terrifying to the animals for them to accept and understand and further process for realistic active dynamic engagement.

That though is easily addressed with further information supplied to agents into intelligence which leads in other than reactions.

Is the current base for evolution, violent revolution … or will an advanced and/or artificial and/or alien intelligence lead humanity away from such as has formerly been thought normal and natural?

Or will such a strange force and novel otherworldly source deliver and driver humanity into evolving violent revolutionary activities?

Are current mainstream media reported and hosted around the globe conflicts proof positive evidence of that latter alien base driver in action?

“to each according to his need, from each according to his ability”
    Slogan popularised by Karl Marx.
I can go with that. I have lots of needs and no abilities. So please provide me with everything. I’ll just sit back and watch all of those with abilities. LOL.
Ever heard of Animal Farm? That’s the way all of these social societies end up.
This idealist idea we keep being fed by Joe ‘Goebels’ Jarvis is beginning to wear thin.
I’ll stick with the principals of self preservation or maybe Ayn Rand.

    • Joe Jarvis

George, I was saying that is NOT what we go off. Was that really unclear? I am aware of the origin of the phrase. -Joe Jarvis

    • George, I was saying that is NOT what the mini-farm runs on. Yes I have read Animal Farm, and everything Ayn Rand wrote. Loved it. I agree mutual self interest and individualism is what is needed. As I said in the article you just commented on, that is how the mini-farm I live on works, and that is how I would set up my own.

I talk about voluntary communities, not forced togetherness enforced at the end of a gun, like in Animal Farm, We the Living, Atlas Shrugged, Anthem, 1984 and so on.

I do however sincerely apologize for enjoying a community of like-minded individuals, and having a positive vision of the future.

      -Joe Jarvis

      • georgesilver

You don’t have to apologise for doing something you enjoy with like minded people. I’m just saying as a plan for a future society it just wouldn’t work. If you had some clever brainwashing technique that made everyone think like you it might work. Unfortunately the world’s population is made up from all sorts of mentalities. The dominating one being the psychopath. Psychopaths have the single-mindedness to control and have the drive to achieve this. Your mentality is extremely benign and cooperative so you do not have this characteristic to dominate and control. Your happy self sufficient community can only exist where it is protected by strong forces that (at the moment|) do not see your way of life a threat to their power.

        • georgesilver

Just to continue this theme (and get it off my chest) I recognise the small trait of psychopath in myself. A Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde syndrome. Fortunately now I’m retired and reasonably comfortable Mr Hyde remains tucked away in his box.
If I was a member of your ‘farm’ I would eventually end up running it. In my working life this is exactly what happened to everything I was involved in. I had lots of people like yourself working for me. They were honest, decent, caring individuals who got all of the heavy-lifting done. Which left me lots of time to plan strategies.

          • Methinks once a psychopath, always a psychopath, georgesilver, is natural par for that supernatural course, although they will be many proclaiming it almightily unnatural.

Ergo by thyself, just a wannabe? Worlds abound in those.

          • Don Duncan

Psychopaths are no problem in a healthy society. They get shunned or “disappeared”. It is the obedient mentality that victimizes itself and then blames the person obeyed that I have a problem with when it forces its way on everyone.

          • Col. Edward H. R. Green

“If I was a member of your ‘farm’ I would eventually end up running it.”

            You’re cock-sure of that, aren’t you ?

Try bullying me so that you can “run” me, and I’d make you dead.

No testosterone-fueled bluster, no boldness due to distance. That is a promise, one that I would tell you to your face, and carry out if you give me reason for me to regard you as an imminent threat to my life.

            Been there, done that.

I am certain that I would not be alone on that “farm” who would make you so, too.

I like segregation of each race, with our own kindred, in our individual nations. Multiculturalism is a tool of the ungodly communist. The U.S. was/is/always be a white country, but everyone wants what we have created, and an enemy within our nation’s government want to steal what is ours by opening our gates to the third world nations, people we have nothing in common.

Different nations like different foods, that work with their blood types, in their own country. God designed us differently, I believe for a reason.

I do not dislike third world peoples, but we have nothing in common. I want peace. We must STOP.ALL IMMIGRATION from third world nations.

The work of the serpent seed is TURMOIL. The one world order is spoken of in Revelations…the one world government….not a good thing.

    • Maximiliano Plus Adrienne

u definitly have a point I would not say that any 3rd world immigration is wrong some does actually help open ones mind 2 other cultures and understandings of life and food in particular is a great way 2 get 2gether n connect. food like music speaks a language anybody undertands people come 2gether n socialize n that is posetive in my opinion but there is a limit in regards 2 what could b considered posetive 4 a societas! what happens 4 example in germany right now with millions of A-rabs n Africans flowing into the country will b bad news for us and europe at large! culture is very important in order 2 understand oneself n understand others n only the one who understands oneself can hope 2 become a mature godfearing human person “Nosce te ipsum”! 2 get 2 know somebody from say Sierra Leone 2 sit down n share a good traditional meal n maybe find out as I did about a private primary school called JFK in Freetown what could b wrong in that? after all God created us all but u r right he will have had a reason 4 making Africans, Asians,Caucasians etc n once u feel like a foreigner in your own country as I do in Germany now some has definitely gone the wrong way unless of course u want civil war in order 2 maximise your profits n belong 2 the fascists scum which rules London, Paris, Berlin, Roma etc which I do not but that is another storia….

      • lois

        Thank you for your reply.

Bottom line each nation needs to protect their borders, only allowing visitation of other peoples, NOT given citizenship.

I feel, bottom goal of those wanting globalism, is they want total control of the world.

The serpent seed has to destroy, control all caucasian(white) CHRISTIAN nations in order to control the world.

        Revelation Chapter 12

1 And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars:

2 And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered.

3 And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.

4 And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.

5 And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and [to] his throne.

6 And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred [and] threescore days.

7 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,

8 And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.

9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.

11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.

12 Therefore rejoice, [ye] heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.

13 And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man [child].

14 And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.

15 And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood.

16 And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth.

17 And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.

u r right, globalism is all about turning mankind into slavery it is n always has been the devils blueprint for the world! we have 2 stay faithful n try 2 help as many people as possible 2 wake up n fight them wherever we can! god bless u n viel glueck, max

          • lois

Max, I’m glad you can see the ultimate goal of globalism…..slavery, control. I hope others around the world, will see also.

            God bless!

My ideal modern community would be an ancient community. Problem? In all of the libraries, bookstores, websites I have yet to find a single book written by a caveman. And, since all flesh is as (non-smokable) grass, here today and gone tomorrow, except for the frozen corpse found in a Himilayan glacier, hence not datable, I don’t have any confidence in the ‘scholarly’ analises of the diet and daily activities of said cavemen. In fact, there is only speculation that they ever lived in caves. There is only evidence that they visited caves. Any foodstuffs left behind would have disintegrated just as their bodies would have.

How do I know I would have liked to live as they lived? I don’t. But I have lived in various modern communities and have become quite uncomfortable in all of them, thus I guess an ancient one would be preferable if not ideal.

    • That is true, lots of speculation in studying the ancients.

  • Praetor

The word ‘Family’ is missing. No families need apply. The highest form of social structure the family, not excepted here in this community. Sounds like alienated disconnected individuals looking for a family. Outside of family, all the forms of structure are just differences in economics and the control of economics.

This modern world has created nothing if not a bunch of disconnected individuals looking for a family and that family is a collective.!!!

    • Good point. We do mention in the article that people have been lured away from family in addition to other small scale institutions. You are right that the family once fulfilled many necessary emotional functions, and the government worked hard to destroy that.

  • MetaCynic

A libertarian society based on the non aggression principle is much more likely to evolve among communities of like-minded individuals who share the same language, religion, race, customs and history than within a multi-cultural social conglomerate ruled from a distant city.

A common culture is the lubricant which minimizes friction even among individuals who embrace the NAP in theory. The hard part isn’t in accepting the NAP. It is in applying it to all the messy gray areas of life such as what is the appropriate punishment for transgression of the NAP. There will be disagreement among libertarians even in defining aggression in all its possible forms. When does defense become aggression? At what levels, for example, does sound become noise which can be suppressed by force? What behavior constitutes sexual harassment? Is an unwelcome smile and wink sexual harassment? Some cultures may regard it as so.

My point is that even if libertarianism can take root in a large multi-cultural society, because of cultural differences, there will be so much disagreement in the specifics of its application that eventually there will be calls for the state to impose one group’s notion of the NAP on all the others. Libertarians must understand that the NAP cannot exist in a vacuum. For it to emerge, it must get along with the dominant culture.

  • Anon.

It is a great idea, but there’s always tons of things we have no idea about.(unknown unknowns) Like Morgellons disease. Where people excrete polyethylene “fibers” from under their skin!!! These “fibers” are identical to ones that fall out of the sky from chemtrails along with heavy metal nanoparticles. And the fibers are alive too…

It is impossible to get away from the tyranny unfourtnatly.

    • No, it is not at all impossible by any means. You are simply still accepting the many illusions that have been created for you and we are all exposed to. They are all simply control mechanisms and we can all simply let go of them if we choose to do so !

Good article although it does all go a bit deeper than mentioned for many reasons. Maybe the writer did not want to over load the readers with too much reality or truth ? and that happens often when you get into personal honesty and simple truths here in USA today. We have not lived in much of any truths for a very long time so there is a sort of unwind or reality check necessary to go forward. Most people have no idea they have controlled their entire lives by control freaks and government. That is what we are seeing now, that reality setting in and it causes certain kinds of chaotic reactions and anger and fear !

Very few Americans are willing or capable to face much of it actually. so of course it continues ! At least we are at that point of real possible change for the better !–.html
