Now Paul Craig Roberts Wonders About RT

By Anthony Wile

Anthony Wile

We carry columns by Paul Craig Roberts – former Assistant Secretary of the US Treasury – and one published this past week entitled "Agenda Driven News" dealt with a topic we'd just discussed here at The Daily Bell.

I'd written that the big Russian news channel RT was actually reinforcing the West's globalist and statist agenda despite seeming to support those forces in the US and the West that were fighting against the expansion of socialism ... actually, "national socialism" in the US.

You can see my column here: "Elite Neo-Nazis ... Is Russia Today (RT) Part of the Controlled Media Matrix and the Imposition of Global Government?

In his column, Roberts begins with the idea that US news is "agenda driven" – but the real point of his column is that RT's agenda may, in some cases, not be much different than the West's power elite.

He explains he was made aware that RT was following the lead of US mainstream media – at least when it came to the ideology and nomenclature of gun control – as he conducted a Skype interview with RT on December 18th. He gradually realized that RT was "spreading the official US story of the shootings."

The RT interviewer was mostly interested in finding out whether "assault weapons" would be banned. Craig Roberts explains what an assault weapon is:

Gun-control advocates have defined "assault weapon" to be a semi-automatic civilian version of military weapons, such as AR-15, the civilian version of the military M-16, and AK-47. During the Clinton administration the civilian version of these weapons was not permitted to have various harmless features because the features made the rifles have a military appearance, and the weapons were restricted to magazines that held no more than ten rounds.

Today 20 and 30 round magazines are available. For a professional, the capacity of the magazines is immaterial. With experience a person can change clips in a second. A button is pushed, the clip drops out and a new one is inserted. For reasons hard to follow, gun control advocates think that a ten-round clip turns an "assault weapon" into something else.

The term "assault weapon" is a political rather than military term. As Roberts points out, the differences between civilian and military versions are mostly cosmetic. The term was no doubt invented to make such weapons sound ominous – the better to ban them.

According to Roberts's own account, he didn't dwell much on assault weapons but shifted the conversation to the real issue, which was why the state itself – US FedGov – wanted to ban such weapons, and others beside.

I told RT Moscow that the United States was the most complete police state in human history. Thanks to modern technology, Washington is able to spy on its subjects far beyond the capabilities of Joseph Stalin and Adolf Hitler. Even George Orwell's imagination in his dystopian novel, 1984, has been surpassed by Washington's current practice. The "war on terror" is the excuse for the American Police State.

A police state, I said, was inconsistent with an armed population, and as all other constitutional amendments have fallen, the sole remaining amendment, the Second Amendment, will not survive much longer.

Mr. Roberts wondered aloud how the emphasis can be on so-called assault weapons when according to the Associated Press, "all the victims of the Connecticut elementary school shooting were killed up close by multiple rifle shots."

And he quotes CNN as saying that, "police recovered three weapons at the scene: a Glock and a Sig-Sauer, which are handguns, as well as a .223 Bushmaster rifle. The rifle was in the back seat of the car the gunman drove to the school; the handguns were inside the school."

For Roberts, there is confusion about what weapons were used: handguns (according to some reports), rifle shots (according to the medical examiner) or assault weapons (according to the most popular media meme).

The discrepancy is obvious. Either the news reports are incorrect, the medical examiner is wrong, or someone other than Adam Lanza shot the children.

Roberts is obviously implying that the confusion over guns and shooters is what RT should be investigating, not the chances of banning "assault weapons." But Roberts's implicit suggestion was "too much for RT Moscow's news anchor." She cut him off and refocused the program on assault rifles.

It was a focus, he adds, that was further reinforced when he was asked to stay online for a post-interview question. Here's how Roberts sums up:

The focus on "assault weapons" is puzzling for another reason. According to news reports Lanza had a personality or mental disorder, or perhaps he was just different.

Regardless, he was on medication. So does the blame lie with guns or with medication?

As the agenda is to ban guns, the blame is placed on guns.

In the previous mass shooting at the Colorado movie theater, eyewitness accounts differed from the official account, and according to news accounts the suspect was involved with the government in some sort of mind control experiments and was found after the shooting sitting in a car in the movie theater parking lot.

Similarly, the Connecticut school shooting has puzzling aspects. In the real time report to the police, a teacher says that she saw "two shadows running past the gym." The police radio recording also reports two men in a van at the school stopped and detained, and various news sources report that the police arrested a man in the nearby woods. The man says, "I didn't do it," but how would a man out in the woods know what had just happened? There are no TVs to watch in the woods; yet, the man denied doing the shooting. Very strange ....

It seems odd, however, that RT Moscow would uncritically follow the US media in reporting the official story after experiencing, for example, the US media's intentional misreporting of the Georgian-Russian war, which was started by the former Soviet republic of Georgia but blamed on Russia. Does RT Moscow really believe the US media that the US missile bases surrounding Russia are directed at Iran?

The Connecticut school shooting is a tragedy in more ways than one. Children lost their lives, families lost their children, and the tragedy is being used to disarm Americans faced with a police state growing in power and menace.

Though RT has provided a platform to libertarian oriented, small-government types in the West, Roberts has experienced what I have during my interviews there ... a side of RT that is actually in support of some of the most worrisome aspects of the Western authoritarian agenda.

As I pointed out in my column, it is really only the Internet that gives us the ability to provide our own thoughts about freedom and free-market thinking in an unfiltered way. And here at The Daily Bell we don't seek to position or filter opinions. We get enough of that elsewhere.

RT is the Russian equivalant of the Voice of America. It counters American propaganda. Of course RT has an agenda and it is not an agenda for the common man. But neither is it the American Imperial agenda and therein lies its virtue and its usefulness.

Yes Indeed, I noticed that and pointed it out to a friend who was hanging out with me. The female anchor was asking someone from the NRA I believe, or some other 2nd Amendment protecting org, and, when the guest was talking about gun SAFETY, and the proper role of guns, and how armed populations have the lowest gun crime rates, she cut hom off and PUT WORDS IN HIS MOUTH.
She responded with,'So what you're saying is, the time has come where we need to open up some serious discussion about gun control... " I acknowledge I put it in quotes, but I admit I paraphrased. Point is, the guest NEVER said anything even remotely related to gun control, and he knew full well that the anchor was trying to steer the conversation in that direction, so he purposefully avoided mentioning or referring to gun control until the anchor said it.

My conclusion at the time was and still is, RT is simply controlled opposition. Glean from it what real info is there to sell the lies, just as with the rest of the MSM... S.O.P.

2012 - The Commission on Presidential Debates is a private corporation headed by the former chairmen of the Republican and Democratic parties. The CPD is a duopoly which allows the major party candidates to draft secret agreements about debate arrangements including moderators, debate format and even participants. The result is a travesty riddled with sterile, non-contentious arguments which consistently exclude alternative voices that Americans want to hear.

This documentary also reveals the big corporations who 'sponsor' the CPD and how third party candidates are purposely excluded. One of these sponsors, Annheiser Busch, is partly owned by Senator John McCain's wife. Former Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura's election as an independent candidate proves that opening up debates can lead to real change - something the entrenched Republican and Democratic Parties don't want to see.

Everyone has a viewpoint and an agenda.

I watch Capital Account and Max Keiser on RT. But I never imagined that RT, from out of Russia, was some beacon of Liberty.

Perhaps Owell's vision in 1984 of three interdependent super states locked as 'enemies' in eternal conflict is the model for the New World Order. There is no equivalent of the 2nd Amendment in the Russia or China branches of the NWO. Why would this be allowed in the American branch, or be condoned by the other two ?

From "The attributes of Man"

About tools:

"6.9 Toolmaking

Since man has the ability to discover knowledge (relationship between action and consequence allowing prediction) and manual dexterity allowing the working of materials, man is able to use these skills in the creation of tools. A tool is knowledge instantiated in physical matter.

Using knowledge that a bent piece of wood stores energy and sharp objects pierce; man is able to create the bow and arrow. The action of placing the arrow and making the bow taut results in the consequence that the arrow flies when released. Seeking further knowledge of why the arrow does not fly straight results in refinements.

An unfortunate consequence of tools is that, since they encapsulate knowledge which the user does not need (or usually want) to know and knowledge is power, tools give power to those who may not be competent to exercise them wisely. In particular, our declining freedom is a direct consequence of the balance of power between individuals and organizations being altered in favor of those who control technology. Personally, I am beginning to regret some of my past contributions to information technology, just as the scientists who created nuclear weapons were no longer able to live guilt-free lives after these weopons were unwisely used on populations as opposed to a warning demonstration which would have achieved the same results.

Given the power of tools, scientific progress (assuming we don't make ourselves extinct) is a genie that cannot be put back in the bottle. The answer is not to ban tools but to acknowledge that, as inanimate objects, tools are morally neutral and can be used for good or evil. It is the actions of those who choose to use tools, such as guns for harm that should be addressed as opposed to banning the thing."

I must respectfully disagree with you WRT (with respect to) "them" adapting to us and our weopons, a perpetually escalating tit for tat war between the free and tyrants. They have a critical weakness: "consent of the governed" which, neglecting intelligence resolves to "ability of the majority to survive, have enough food"

Since "they" are unproductive parasites, unable and / or unwilling to be productive to feed the masses themselves, the productive can just shrug, produce no more than survival demands and, watch the grim reaper of "Mathematics of Rule" deprive tyrants of the resources required to "wield the whip":

This process has been in operation for quite some time. Predators will "cave", because they need us more than we need them, but, of course will never "cry uncle and admit it". Too much false pride regarding their "neccessity".

@rossbcan,

Yes, the internet could have been a great tool. The problem is, that a tool is always a false solution by it's very nature. Every tool that had ever changed anything about our lives was also later used to make it worse.

The true solution is, like you said, in thinking better. Bettering yourself first, getting rid of traits that are counterproductive within oneself. This way, you become truly different and thus you have a different life.

Where a tool is only a cheat, a secret weapon of the Gods that came to rest in my hand is only a temporary solution, because since I am no different than my enemy, will later be adopted by my enemy just the same, and I shall suffer the same as before, only now multiplied by the power of the tool employed by both sides. Like a gun versus a stick, it helps at first, only to be seen adopted by other side and now we have massive casualties where we would have massive injuries before.

The authorities will learn and use the internet to their favor. This advancement, the awakening we had due to the internet will not last.

Reply from The Daily Bell

It is not the tool, Mava but the results we label the Internet Reformation. The results seem obvious to us ...

@danny b:

Read your link and my heart stopped for a second. I thought they really did it first. Declared gold to be a legal tender.

Upon closer investigation, they did not. What a disappointment.

Their 15.55 g gold piece to be accepted at a face value of 100 Rubles is a sad joke. 15.55 g of gold is worth about 800 to 900 USD on a free market. The rate of russian ruble to usd on Click to view link is 30 to 1 usd. This means, that half a troy ounce of gold (about 15.55g) is worth about 25000 Rubles. So, to declare that 15.55g gold piece is to be accepted at a face value of 100 Rubles is to underestimate the worth of gold contained therein to the tune of 250 times.

American Gold Eagle, weighing one troy ounce is declared to worth 50 USD at a face value, but on a free market retails for over USD 1700, which underestimates the gold worth about 34 times.

Only 34 times vs. 250 times of that Russian gold.

No one is going to surrender a Gold Eagle at a face value, and no one in Russia is going to surrender 100R face value Gold Piece for only 100 Rubles.

Sorry to say, because I am disappointed, but this is a very sick joke.

@mava

You have just proven the point, that by objectively sharing perceptions across differeng environments, we, thanks to the internet, can converge on objective truth. The true power of the "intenet reformation", in action, as DB calls it.

I so appreciate it when someone "tells it like it is", from a very different box than mine. It makes my box "bigger", as I also attempt to do for others.

Thank you.

... and, you are so right, it is the anomalies, the inconsistencies that will ultimately "do THEM in" if people JUST THINK.

Once upon a time, before Satellite coverage was uniform across Canada, I used to watch the "eastern", "western" and "Quebec" news on a dish that could tume different satellites, to see the respective slants, the tuning of news to "regional preconceptions", the inflaming of "regional interests" to create conflict, etc. As an ex USSR "citizen", I am sure you know THEIR script, quite well. The internet completely destroys their ability to do this, since the signal is "everywhere".

Now, we just have to "watch out" for the imposition of a "common truth", globally, which is really, just another BIG LIE.

Posted by mava on 12/23/12 01:11 PM

Well, I am Russian, fluent, educated there, lived there long time. Am I qualified to speak on Russian matters?

Russia is a dictatorship. Putin is somewhat like a Hitler. (and, btw, it's Putin as in "pOOped" not "pUnitive", his last name is derived from "Put' [poot']" meaning "the way, the trail", and together means "of the way, of the trail, of the kind of the way".) He had enormous popularity, because like Hitler, in his mind he believes that he is fighting for Russia. The only other thing that carries Putin is that he, in sharp contrast to every one of the previous Soviet leaders is actually a Sportsman and keeps himself in shape. 70% of his approval is simply his good physical shape. What does this tell you about Russia? Anything?

It should tell you that Russia is dreaming about a warrior King. A strong man. Like America, Russia is chock full of very unintelligent people. If and when they happen to have an opinion, they want their opinion to be forced on everyone. Understand?

They are not terrible monsters, as you frequently like to present Russians. They are just like you, I mean the majority of Americans. They are not intelligent enough to perceive that their ideas can be wrong. Once something clicks in their mind, they think this is it, "they've got it". You need to try to understand them, because understanding is the key.

Your own, the Americans, in their majority are exactly as unintelligent. Once they think they have found a solution, they always want to force it violently on all others, for their own good.

So, this is why Russians want the Warrior King, may-be like Stalin, or Ivan, or Peter, or even the great Olg, the viking. They want him to make the lives of other Russians better. Forcibly.

Ok? Now. Why did I take so much time to explain this little point? To make it easy for you to see, that until the day that the majority of Russians can change their character and the intelligence level, you shall kill and bury all hope of Russia being anything else than it has been. Dumb people are not excited by smart leaders who know the way forward. Instead, they keep electing or allowing to take over, the same brand of people, always strong, violent, intolerant leaders with strong Charisma, who think they have understood what needs to be done. Be it converting the country to communism or to "capitalism" , they do it as fervently as ever. I put "capitalism" in the quotes, because capitalism presupposes free markets, and if you are looking for the freedom, then Russia should be the last place on earth for you to examine (although... may-be not the last, at least for Americans, at least as of late... ).

So, we know that Putin is a strong, charismatic leader, who has no idea of what he is doing, but strongly believes he is correct. He steals a ton too, but, unless you show me the king that doesn't, this makes no difference.

What does that make an RT? Do you think there can be a TV station that would have a nerve to publish ANYTHING different than the point of view of Putin, except those "conspiracy theory" stations that "openly call him on it", because he likes stations like that, them being not in the respected mainstream, it only makes a point that he is a very "tolerant" fuhrer by showing up alive the next morning, but no real harm.

RT is no doubt a channel of propaganda, government propaganda. Of course it seeks to influence public opinion in the way that would benefit Putin's view of Russia.

On the other hand I don't think RT has any desire or time to seek to destroy America. You guys had been accusing Russians of such plans for ever, and I remember dropping on the floor and orienting my feet to the blast in the school since I was learning to read, because Americans were ready to attack us. I remember my surprise when I learned from a same age friend in USA, that he too, had to do the same, expecting Russians to attack.

Russians do not ever desire war. They are too busy, and they have a ton of land. Further, to desire a war is a negative "karma" in a Russian psycho. We say "He who come here with the sword will die by the sword". We all about defense. We badmouth our leaders for foreign excursions, and at the same time weep and support our troops, for the lack of any other choice, just like yourselves. Remember, that Russians were all slaves who were united and defended, they do not believe in taking war anywhere, unless, someone attacks them. Even Stalin had to present the war with Germany as an unexpected and unprovoked attack by Germany on USSR, because this is the only way Russians would support the war. Like yourself (fighting better half of the world) , they were forced in Afghanistan and Czechoslovakia by their leaders. Unlike yourself however, they rarely say "such and such country needs to be turned into a glass parking lot".

So, the RT doesn't care about America enough to try to screw you. All, they care is what you think of Russia, and what Putin think of their work.

Now, that said, RT is a million times better news source than any American channel. Why? Because they are not in America and they don't care what your fearless leader think of their work. Plus, they are Russians, meaning that with all their shortcomings they are still pretty intelligent and are capable of delivering a very interesting point of view. I watch RT with pleasure. I MUCH RATHER watch RT than any American news channel (I am fluent in English too, and actually prefer English, so this is not a question of linguistic convenience).

I also watch A.J. and others. I do not take on anyone's ideology, I simply drop it all off. I filter every news source strictly for news items that are conflicting with others. I memorize those conflicting details, however small.
I assume that ALL news are lying to me. I suppose they all have their agendas. I believe they are all managed, scripted, but by different directors. I expect that reality being as described, every news agency is going to drop some important detail from time to time, because it is hard to coordinate with the enemy, and this is how I am going to find out the truth.

I suggest, you do the same. Be it RT or CNN or FOX or HARETZ, they are all liars. But they will all make mistakes. Those mistakes are yours to catch. I suggest that this is the only intelligent way of using these sources.

But, unlike most Russians, I have no intention to force you to follow my suggestion.

After all the reports on the internet following the Auroroa, Colorado "Batman" shooting, where the 'lone gunman' choose that particyular theatre with it's "Gun Feee Zone" policy, over movie theatres closer to him, larger than the one chosen, etc. All reports from witnesses claim more than one shooter, now there are confliciting reports from the MSM official version of Sandy Hook, yes, it is a tragedey, but there are similar reports; the scumbag Adam Lanza's mom's bushmaster was left in the trunk of the car; he was found dead with two handguns; how does this account for the spent shell casings in the school, that are rifle .223 shells? What about the van with two guys and and reports of that guy in the woods???
we cannot rule out; however horrid or farfetched; the distinct possiblity that there was a government agency involved in creating these mass shootings as a pretext to disarming the American people.

In the US, even an assault rifle would not be a significant deterrent to the might of the armed services. Guerrilla warfare would only be minimally effective with the current transportation infrastructure and urban Guerrilla warfare would only be a little better for a short while. So one is left with the question of assault rifles being a realistic home defense.

The larger clips would afford one the opportunity to fend off a home invasion by a gang of hoodlums better than a limited capacity shotgun. However the possibility of killing innocents arise due to the penetrating long range capacity of the bullets. It is a shame to have 99% of gun owners being sane and law abiding and perhaps fewer than 1% causing all this mayhem. Perhaps a rational solution can be reached?

Regarding the pro / con bandying about of opinions regarding Paul Craig Roberts, I find, for the most part (in addition to superficial "thinking" on the part of the bandyiers):

a) His identification of the reality of problems to be fairly accurate and objective. In this area, he is a friend of liberty, doing us a favor, a contribution.

b) His analysis of root causes to be way off the mark, an attempt to set us up for...

c) His prescriptions for what ails us, implications of more forceful corecion, more hair of the dog that bit us.

Statists and, PCR is definately one do not give a crap about "the issues" (pretexts), they just want to wield the whip and "tax eat" and "enjoy" the position of power and perks, to which they are addicted.

My "reading of the tea leaves" is that "cold turkey" is inevitable for all addicts (pursuers of "something for nothing", at the expense of others), with incalculable "collateral damage" to peace and civilization just over the horizon.

The economy here in the States worries me the most. If we don't have any money how can we buy guns to protect ourselves from big bor. soetoro? I am trying to save enough to buy a small hand gun. There is a group of people close by that are stealing everything that is not nailed down, on my place. I have no way to protect myself & law enforcemnet is 30 min to 1 hr. away. At least it takes them that long to get here! 3 to 15 miles. I am almost 73 now, and for most people you can't get out of bed now.
But this is my home & I Will protect what I have left of what I, alone, earned, however I can from big Bro. & his thugs. There are no good cops anymore!

I have lived in a Communist country and I know how their propaganda works.

RT is Russian propaganda aimed at the western democracies and it is designed to reduce your self confidence. It seems to be working.

RT is not your friend.

... guess I should mention "guns". Focussing on this issue, IMHO, is also a diversion, part of maintaining the false "might is right" paradigm of "whom should rule", the "winner" of the eternal, pointless "king og the hill" game, where to "win" is to ally all others (strange bedfellows) against the "king".

Forget it. "We, the productive" have far more decisive and potent weopons to "make our point", independent of whom "has the guns", where they may point them and what THEY want:

Ironically, those whom falsely claim to be "law", my mortal ENEMY, once agreed with me, before TRUTH was subverted by "predators on the bench":

Posted by rossbcan on 12/23/12 05:37 AM

It is pretty apparent that EVERY propaganda instrument that significant resources are directed to has an agenda, driven by those whom expect ROI (return on investment). No such thing as "something for nothing" which is contrary to natural law, therefore impossible.

The agenda (goals), assuming it is contray to the objective wills of those it is imposed upon (meaning, NOT a voluntary honest trade), can ONLY be achieved by some combination of force and fraud. Fraud is most economically and politically efficient, because you can TRICK people into doing or at least tolerating your bidding at least until they "wise up", at which point a "new fraud", springs up, fully formed (Evil empire fall "peace dividend"? Hah!, take the "war of terror").

Direct use of naked force (and, there is a lot more more of this going on than media dares report and, what they do report mis-identifies the perps) is a glaring anomoly to those who can or will think and are able to connect the dots between the fraudulent and forceful agendas, correctly perceiving them as twin pincers of tyrants herding the sheeple to the "middle", THEIR AGENDA.

It is so simple to THINK and be immune to propaganda, yet, this appears to be beyond the ability of most, thanks to a century+ assault on education by state, centrally controlled "indoctrination", the creation of Pavlov citizens, whom lap up propaganda and, salivate, as programmed.

THINK and be immune to manipulation / propaganda. Dissent and, have a fighting chance to survive the mass culling / shearing that we are being collectively steered towards:

As to RT's "libertarian" slant, parently obvious. The successes of Mises, Lew Rockwell, Ron Paul and yes, the humble DB have alerted our predators to a significant THREAT to their agenda. History has taught them that you cannot just smite and suppress freedom, suppress it and the hydra of freedom has far more heads to bite tyrants with than the hydra of tyranny has to bite dissenters with. So long as people WANT freedom, it cannot be killed.

So, RT is a fake, Potempkin sacrificial lamb of libertarion expression. They are and will pretend to be libertarian, just so we can observe them "lose", for what appears (to idiots) to be very good "reasons", "proving" that "freedom cannot work". If it is collectively concluded "doesn't work", WHY would people waste their efforts attempting to achieve the "impossible"? (despite the historical fact that western civilization is a product of and cannot function without freedom).

"Give up" on freedom and, you give up on life. It is that simple. Why would predators want it to be otherwise? Your demise is their survival:

Night (Dark Age II) may be coming, but, I, for one do not intend to go "quietly".
